Kitchen-sink article:art, surfing, Ben Hur, La Jolla...

..."Retail Therapy," college years, commissions, exposure to different styles, Strange Things Happen, Rumble Fish.

I think the writer tried to jam every factoid that would fit into this article. Lots of background and detail. Some good quotes.

My favorite bit is this tiny mid-sentence quotation:
In Germany, Copeland is finishing up the score for “Ben Hur Live,” which will regale modern audiences with two hours (”all epic”) of Roman spectacle
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

Thanks for posting, DM.

Very interesting article.

It says he has been tapped to do 2 operas in addition to the gamelon work with the Dallas Symphony. I didn't know about the operas.

And the origins of Retail Therapy are revealed. So it's a bit of a spoiler if you own "From Rumblefish to Gridlock'd" although reading the article makes even more excited to hear this work evolve into a chamber music piece.

Thanks, DM!

Great article.

One of the first times I called the box office they said some of his old school buds had called about getting tickets to the show. Must be pretty cool for them to see him perform after knowing him as a kid.
Stewart and Stanley together again!! YO!

I saw that, but I'm not convinced that it means what it sounds like. Because of the comparison with "currently" and because I find it odd that he might have 2 operas in the works right now, I was taking that as some poor phrasing referring to Stewart's two operas in the past. Dunno. I would just be cautious there without other info or proof.

This is sounding like the long academic discussion last year of Yo Ho Ho now with the emphasis on the gramatical placement of a work.

You may be right since it seemed to be news to everyone here. We should try to ask Stewart in La Jolla about the operas in the works and generally get a sense of what is coming in the future from him.
