More info on La Jolla performance just posted

They today updated the La Jolla Music Society SummerFest pages to have the title of the work to be premiered (Retail Therapy) and the program notes with a discussion of the 4 peice Stewart will be performing. We learn that Retail Therapy was written during Tourzilla in the program notes.

From the Program information page at
http://www.ljms.org/SummerFest-2009/Per ... sions.html

From the program notes:

[quote]
STEWART COPELAND
Born 1952
Celeste (2008)
Celeste was commissioned in 2008 by the violinist Daniel Hope, for him and me to perform at the Savannah Music Festival. Right now Celeste is in the audience, no longer sneaking into her big sisters‘ rooms to play with their toys. She is the Princess of Siam.

Retail Therapy, “La Jolla”(2009)
Commissioned for tonight‘s concert by the La Jolla Music Society for SummerFest, this was written in hotel rooms as an escape from the Rock Monster that ate 2008. I was on tour with my band and found solace in friendly emporiums across the land. This tune is one of the least strange objects that ended up in my suitcase.

Kaya (1997)
Kaya was written as a two hander for piano and mallets but has mostly been played by percussion ensembles, who spread it out for many hands. Tonight‘s version has been arranged for tonight‘s ensemble by my music professor Chris Rozé. Any over-decoration that you might hear is the result of me adding more stuff when his back was turned.

The Gene Pool (1994)
The Gene Pool was commissioned by Ensemble Bash in 1994. It‘s about the struggle for survival of selfish chromosomes. This work was written solely for drums and mallets.

Did you see what else is available from them?

The music geek in me would SO love to get some of these that are available in Print On Demand...just wonder how steep the pricetag would be! But hey, we could someday stage our own Nutter performance! :D

Now it looks like Stewart won't be participating at the 12:30 composer discussion since he isn't listed in the participants:
http://www.ljms.org/SummerFest-2009/Enc ... Forum.html

I almost got a flight 5:30 am or so to try to make it. Glad I didn't.

I also haven't seen anything announcing a showing of Everyone Stares on Thursday night. Hopefully that is still on.

Meanwhile the venue (who excitedly twittered back in April that SC would be in the house) still has him listed: http://www.ljathenaeum.org/specialevents.html

Plans may have changed. Wouldn't be surprising. Info has been so spare in general that I think it's anyone's guess right now.

I just called the box office. Stewart is no longer participating in the composer's discussion. The open rehearsal is still on for Thursday afternoon. No ticket required for that event. We just walk in. "Everyone Stares" will be shown at 7:30 pm & we need to have our ticket to the Friday concert to be able to get into the movie.

Yeah I noticed that too. Which kind of sucks because he's not doing the pre-show talk either and it would be cool to hear him talk from a composer's pov (vs rad rock drummer).

BTW, in talking to the box office the other day they mentioned that tickets will be needed for Everyone Stares. It's free and GA, but tickets are required nevertheless. They're supposed to send me some with the group tickets I purchased. I'll confirm when I get them.

Amy, when will you be getting to the area? Are you scheduled to be there in time for the movie or will those of us who have tickets through you and are going to the movie need to get them from prior to travel?

Ok, I apologize in advance if Im being an idiot but can someone clarify for me.

Stewart the man will be performing at the show friday night at least, correct? But he is not participating in any of he other pre friday events?

{maybe the announcement that he was to be there was going to overflow the crowd?} weird cuz I believe this happened in savannah too, no?

Confusion is understandable.

Yes, he is performing Friday night. There will be 4 of his songs played. While the info hasn't been clear, it looks like he will play on all 4.

He is also performing, if that is the right word, for an open practice Thursday at 2:15 to get ready for the concert, but there is no late admission.

He is NOT now participating in the composer panel discussion noon or so on Thursday.

His movie will be shown Thursday evening for free to ticket holders for Friday concert but I don't know if Stewart himself will be there.

Thanks, Nick. Was a little barmy myself for a minute there.

I personally am gonna be there for the Thursday thing with bells on, just to catch a little more of that live SC experience. Drag on not getting to hear him talk, though. I bet it's just a scheduling thing, since we know he's been out of the US lately.

I'll be in SD the weekend before to visit with family. So, no time probs. I'm planning to go to the rehearsal and the movie. I'll bring the show tickets with me if people want to get them then.

Laurie and I were talking about going to La Jolla Thursday morning anyway. Figured we could stroll, shop, grab a little lunch and hang before heading over to the rehearsal.
