Strange Things Happen - fan review of book

Postby DirtyMartini on 21 Jul 2009 16:41

No major spoilers to fear (IMO)*, pretty general, and only one quote (the content of which should sound familiar), but if you don't want to know some of the topics covered in the book or someone's overall thoughts, don't click.

Though if you haven't already figured out some of the topics covered from the book's subtitle, then I'm a-scared.

Soudns great.

I love this line from the quoted part:
working with me (on drums) requires an unreasonable tolerance for chaos…
I. like Sting, lack an unreasonable tolerance for chaos but love that Stewart requires it.

Considering recent conversation about the galley that was for sale on eBay, etc., I fear I may have been too hasty when I flew past to post the link above, but since that conversation was of a different nature/angle, I'm undecided. This review is out there and because very little of the info included can't already be gleaned from other places such as advertising, etc., I honestly didn't give it much thought: I simply thought some folks might be interested in it. But it's now occurring to me a couple of hours later that it might give some pause. I dunno. If anyone thinks I should nix it, please don't hesitate to say.

Well, I didn't actually read it (am of the 'no spoilers' mindset ;)), but if it's as you say and nothing too salacious is revealed, I think it's OK. (How'd the chick get the book? I'm assuming she's an insider...if so, let the chips fall where they may re: re her reviewing it online...)

You covered your bases by warning us and then posting a link, not copy & pasting the review, I think. Just some $.02.

I see nothing wrong with posting this review. As I understand it, one of the reasons for the galley proofs is for reviews. Nothing wrong with posting reviews of Stewart's book here, in my mind. This is very different from selling the thing.

Of course, if you don't want spoilers, you should stay away from the reviews.

I spent an unreasonable amount of time trying to keep that galley out of circulation. Nonetheless, I have no problem with this review or the posting thereof. As was pointed out, the galleys are out there exactly for the purpose of reviewing. This reviewer seemed pretty professional in that she piqued interest without getting into too much detail. The exerpt held no surprises as its content is similiar to stuff we've heard in interviews during the Tourzilla era. It mostly provides a sample of Stewart's writing style, another thing we're pretty familiar with.
DM also gave fair warning to anyone who wants to totally avoid anything about the book and keep their Strange Things Happen virginity intact until the release date.
Thanks for the link, Kellie.

Hey, Dive, the woman whose blog the review appears on is not the author of the review. Actually, you know her...she's Cathy from sting.com and was at the Whiskey press conference with you (lo, those many years ago!). The review was written by another sting.com member who works in the publishing industry. (OT to Kellie: he's Shawn, the guy I introduced you to at the OTHER press conference...the one about trees!!)

Nothing really too "spoil-ery" in the review. Glad he liked it!

Yeah, I don't see anything in there that we didn't know already. It's more of a tease than a spoiler!

Thanks, Kel :)
