OT-Beasties tour canceled, album postponed on acct of cancer

Unfortunate news arrived this morning from legendary New York-based rap trio, Beastie Boys, namely that band member Adam Yauch (MCA) has a cancerous tumor in his left parotid (salivary) gland. The tumor was detected early and localized in a single area, so hopes are high for effective treatment. Thankfully, the tumor is not located where it might affect Yauch's vocal chords.

Yauch will have to undergo surgery and several weeks of treatment. As such, the Beasties, who recently headlined Bonnaroo alongside Bruce Springsteen, Snoop Dogg and Nine Inch Nails, have cancelled all upcoming live shows. They've also postponed the release of their next album, Hot Sauce Committee Part 1. . . .

Yauch posted video talking about it on the band's home page: http://www.beastieboys.com/

Strangely I happen to know a little bit about this particular problem. The surgery risks ain't pretty. My sincere hopes go out to Yauch for an easy surgery and a full recovery.

Yeah, I have been bummed about this since I heard. But what an amazing and open communication to Beasties fans.

He just couldn't be a nicer or cooler guy, seriously. Hoping his healthy lifestyle helps him get through this.

Agreed. I love that he/they eschewed publicists and label managers and other stupid voices and just went to the fans directly. Very cool.

Very sad news.

I have never been a big fan but I saw them when they did the set before the Police at the 2007 Virgin Music Festival and I enjoyed thier set much more than I expected.

Aw, shit. This sucks. And another one of those 'when crappy things happen to good people" scenarios. (Anybody know if Yauch's a smoker? Hoping he gives it up. And others do as well :ahem:)

Adam's a Buddhist and also very health and diet conscious. VERY. they take a macrobiotic chef along on tour with them to ensure he eats according to his diet and well.

Good article about this type of cancer:http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/thehumancondition/archive/2009/07/21/more-on-beastie-boys-adam-yauch-s-rare-type-of-cancer.aspx
Are there any particular causes for the disease?
There is no known reason why people get parotid tumors. They are not associated with the typical head and neck cancer risk factors like smoking, alcohol, and HPV. The only real established risk factor for parotid tumors is radiation therapy, which is an ionized form of radiation unlike cell phone radiation. Ionized radiation is used to treat head and neck cancers and ironically parotid cancers. There were some folks who are now about fifty to seventy years of age who got radiation to the tonsils in the 1950’s and 1960’s who are at increased risk of radiation-induced cancer.
Really sad to hear this news.
Hope Adam's surgery goes well and that he has an easy recovery.

Man it just keeps coming.

These people are so brave.

I hope he's OK, has to be a nice talented guy.

Good to hear it's treatable but I (we) have been through this stuff and it's real hard.

Gotta dig up more positive vibes and send them out.
