Ghost in the machine

Invisible sun is bleak but a good song. I don't like demolition man and prefer grace jones version. Rehumanize yourself is a good song but the production is poor and the horns give me an earache when they blare out.

Sometimes if i am in a good mood i won't listen to secret journey and darkness.

Probably the deepest police album i guess and i suppose the very people in the world that dismiss the police as bubblegum pop should be the ones listening to this album. you know where i'm coming from.

But i love the first three albums. They are great albums.

The cover is good for this album like you say.

I love "Ghost in the Machine" first of all, that screaming guitar entrance at "Too much information", that caribean vibe and carnival fest on "Every little thing" , I love "Rehumanize yourself" the percussion, bass and horns sounds superb... also "Spirits", "Omegaman" and "Darkness" are piece of art... "One world" is reallly outstanding I ever wait that Stewart kind of little solo that fill my soul t the peak... the same with Andy's riffs at "Demolition man"... "Secret Journey" is a great track that shows how THE POLICE could made some ambience music for films...the synth guitar is simple out of earth... "Hungry for you" is cool definetely guitar chords in the last part invites us to dance... and "Invisible Sun" sounds very brit really nice... uhmmm and the art album cover is enigmatic, minimalistic and balanced in colors with those digital signals, background and type style of THE POLICE name... I only disagree with the horn section at Ghost tour...perhaps a brass section from Jamaica could be great instead of those three at "Ghost Tour"... in the album the horns of Sting rules and works very cool!!!
"One World is enough for all of us"

Too Much Information and Darkness.

Anyway, I love this CD very much.

But I also love all Police's works.

Police's music is already deeply into my inner I and body too...

This album has one of the most amazing continuous sequences of dance music ever created IMO, beginning with the fabulously funky Hungry For You on up to the stellarly energetic One World!

"Ghost" is the "Revolver" for the Police- it's a great bloody record, I think we should all take a relisten- and the simple fact that you're discussing the album shows how relevant the album still is. It was an experimental move to involve funk overtones- ie the guitars, horns- and songs like invisible sun- started to evolve the songwriting into new territory (as a group). Ghost is a great album because it's very strong w/ a completely different musicality and vibe then the previous album. The Police records are all great because they have that true growth factor (in the songs, sounds, musicianship, etc) I'm a Police cheerleader, yes- but Secret Journey? Darkness? Too Much Information (those horn delays) Spirits? Come on.....

My favorite album, hands down. Rich, layered, edgy, lots of low-end. You can blow out a match if you put it next to your speakers. The songs are first rate (except what the !@#$ is Sting saying on "Hungry For You?").

Omegaman, best Andy song ever. Brilliant. Best Stewart playing and drum sound. The first time we hear those cool little bell cymbals! How about the echoing claptrap on "Darkness?" Sounds like thunder.

The ultimate album to crank when you're pissed-off, depressed, or it's raining. Shut off the lights and revel in Sting's blackness for a while, then let the sun in and start living again.

Hearing all these opinions on Ghost makes me realize that over the last 25 years my favorite Police album has varied between the 5 records - just depends on state of mind at any given point. The progression from Outlandos to Sync. is pretty amazing. Next To You to Tea in the Sahara...if you had to get a 'youngin' into the Police and could only give them one record (not one of the hits comps) it would be really tough. I guess I would go with Regatta but ask me tomorrow and I'm sure it'd be one of the others...

Same here: One of the first records I bought was Synchronicity when it was first out as a young-un, then Ghost then went back and got the first three as I was older...So unlike the conventional take, Synchronicity will always hold a special place in my heart: I mean how can your first Police record not? :)

Most of the time Regatta is my fave but after Stewart's movie Outlandos was all the rage in my house once again, then only recently I've been digging Ghost like never before...I love comparison to Revolver in what it's doing within the Police oeuvre, I guess that makes more sense that its something that speaks more in going *back* to it...

Ghost in the Machine

Postby Ska Man on 22 Feb 2007 19:49

When this album was released I felt as if my kids had now grown up and i would have to share them with the rest of the world. Ghost in The Machine represented a definite shift. In my opinion it was as if THE POLICE had dabbled with other cultures music etc but now had the resources to truly put their spin on it (HORNS) The carnival feel of " Every little thing" GOLD . But more notably One World where THE POLICE play DUB. Which up to this album was reserved for live performances only. DUB being an instrumental version of a particular song with emphasis on BASS & DRUMS. Was the album a success absolutely In my opinion this album confirmed now that this was a serious band. The horns are magnificent however i did not appreciate them on the tour thats me being selfish and wanting to see the 3 piece outfit. my favourite tracks everything except Invisible Sun & Hungry for You. 8)
