Hmmm, curious.

On the up side, we've now identified a fairly sizeable group willing to part with some disposable cash, so we're a step ahead toward the next hare-brained scheme!

I'm only speculating but I wonder if the publisher got involved. For example, when you see books with the covers torn off, they're not supposed to be sold. Those are intended to be shipped back to the publisher. I remember seeing a dumpster full of these at a major chain bookstore for which I worked during high school--they were allowed to give them to employees but not sell them. So if this is marked "not for sale" in some way, it's possible the publisher got involved OR even ebay might have caught up with it. I think it would be hard for the seller to pull it from sale on his own after getting bids because receipt of a bid constitutes an agreement for the seller to sell and the buyer to complete the purchase once bidding is over.
