Advance copy of Stewart's book on ebay

Confession: I'm a reviewer for Amazon.com's Vine program. Got invited because I got a high proportion of recommends on some reviews I wrote for printers and other gizmos, but mostly I get to preview books before they're released. I get sent galley proofs like this one, to read and then write up a review for the site, in order to generate pre-release "buzz"...I don't get paid for it, but I do get free books, and most of the ones I get are what has already been described: really low-quality proofs, complete with typos & formatting errors. (Every now and then I'll get something goof-free...I'm reading a great hardcover book right now about a murder in an Aboriginal community in Australia...)

Anyway, I'd been thinking what I'd do if SC's book had shown up in the newsletter I get from AMZ pimping whatever they've got for the week (sometimes they have cool stuff like cameras, IPods and even furniture, but those things are usually gone justlikethat. You can also snipe things off the Vine website, which is how the other Viners get 'em.) I don't think I'd request the SC book, actually.

I'd probably help you guys bid on it just to get it out of circulation and to prevent spoilers, but I ain't reading the book until the official release date. I'm funny that way. Didn't listen to the new Wilco album till the release, even though it was streaming on Wilcoworld for a month in advance.

I also don't open my Christmas presents until the afternoon of the 25th, come to think...none of this "Christmas Eve" BS for yours truly...;)
Only semi-related: STEWART, three words: quality proofreader please. I'm begging you. Otherwise, Susan, luddite lady, Schmaffy, and I are going to explode. Thank you.
She's very serious about this. It won't be pretty.

Love the idea of getting the book - not reading it- possibly getting it signed and reselling it for charity. Lovely:)

No matter what the morality is of the person selling it... it's going to go somewhere. Question is, do we want to do anything about it?

I know it is a token gesture at best - there will be other copies that show up - but since it has been a while since we've attempted something daft, this does seem to be an opportunity to keep our collective 'batshit crazy' , multi-currency, timezone challenging, organisational skills sharpened.

For anyone who is salivating over the possibility of owning this item, the idea is that it comes up for sale again after official publication, at which point it will probably cost less than it will this time round.

If anyone things the idea sucks - and it may be a shitty idea - do please say so. I have a tendency to type first and think later.....

Yes to all that Susan added. Thanks, Susan. I had entirely forgotten about subsidiary rights, etc.
I was talking with Stewart about the work I did with the book of The Police I wrote years ago, the one with his foreword; I remember I gave the final version of what I wrote to the publisher, then they read it and changed a few lines, then I re-read it and discovered THEY did some mistakes, and changed it again; they kept it again, changed what I told them to change and I had it back to re-read it again to give the final ok....Stewart told me he's doing exactly the same...ahaha!
Haha. Revisions rumba.

Smudge, like I said elsewhere, you can't stop the signal and it'll likely have siblings, but you know I'm generally in for any hare-brained scheme that involves a little rush of outrage. If folks want to give this a shot, my lowly [paltry sum redacted] that wasn't used for the Eardrum discs can be diverted this way instead. Y'all's call.

I gotta say that, even though it'll make people's chances at winning harder, it does tickle me to see that that galley's already commanding $100.

Ughhhh! I hate the idea of this being auctioned on eBay...but I LOVE the idea of going in as a group to foil the spoiler!! Put me down for $50. And, yes, I admit...a big part of the appeal is being part of another hare-brained scheme! I've had a sentimental kind of day and I'm missing you all! So...who's doing the bidding???

Thank you, Kate (who I owe about a hundred phone calls!), for hatching this scheme! It makes me smile!! Hell, woman, YOU make me smile! (Missing you!!)

It seems like a sufficient number of people are going for this crazy idea. So much so that it just might work.
I fully understand that there are bound to be other copies just waiting in the e-bay wings until this one is sold. But this gesture is our little way of putting up our collective middle finger at a tiny sliver of what's wrong with this world. And, damn, that feels good!
I'm willing to co-ordinate the madness, but I don't want to be the bidder. For a number of reasons, I don't "do" e-bay. I think it's best if we take this underground now and start organizing via e-mail. It's not so wise to shout our secret plan all over the internet. If there is somebody out there that is ready for a bidding war, it's best he/she doesn't know how much we've pledged towards this. I believe everyone who has pledged so far has my e-mail address. Betsy, I still have yours if you don't have mine. Y'all give me a shout and we'll work this sucker out.
We're still looking for a bidder and somebody who would likely have a shot at getting Stewart to sign the galley before resale.
If you're interested and don't have my e-mail address, let me know via this thread. Please don't mention dollar amounts or definite intentions. We'll work out how to get in touch with me then. Sorry for being difficult. I don't want to put my addy out there if I don't have to. I will though if it becomes necessary.

Well, I am able to bid and it seems that we have a few of us going to La Jolla... you never know.

LLady, shoot me an email please:)

Anyone else willing to contribute can email one of us or post it here I guess.

Hopefully the item will fetch more than we collectively pay for it!

PR, check your mailbox. I just sent you something. If you didn't get it, let me know. I used the e-mail address I had from last summer.

Both of them are good addresses, but it isn't in my inbox yet... just one more reason for switching.
