A friend of mine has that surname for real: Massimo Stingo (and he is a Sting fan, he had a Police tribute band, and he was the singer)...ahaha.

No I don't think it's disrespectful at all...it's just a nickname that Stewart uses. Like a term of endearment.

We noticed during the film "Human Rights Now" that Bruce Springsteen introduced Sting as "Stingo," but they were in South America at the time. And yes, we laughed out loud. I don't think it's disrespectful although I am pretty confident no one on sting.com calls him that (yes, I'm a member there too).

YES, "Stingo" is disrespectful: it is a nickname that shows a lack of courtesy or respect, like "Stewpot" or the like. As Tamadude mentioned, yes, it can also be a term of endearment, like when you say something rude or teasing to one of your friends in jest (such as when policerule and I call each other "bitch"); the two are not mutually exclusive. The nickname itself is inherently impudent: it's meant to tweak; that's the point of it. But whether "Stingo" is meant as playful or insulting at any given moment depends on who is saying it and in what context.

I'd guess that Stewart calling him Stingo is probably just fine. Any of us schmucks, not fine.
Now, Malgordo -- that definitely lacks respect, but it is just a silly inside thing between us, so much so that it is rendered harmless. I doubt Sting would have a clue that he was being referred to if he ever heard Malgordo used.

i'm sure that calling him "Gordo" to his face would wind him up enormously, which is why i wouldn't do it.. i'd probably babble and come out with Mr Sting or something equally ridiculous..... but the 'gordo' of which i speak, i'm sure sting would agree, is not the man but the presented version or my perception of it.

although Stingo or Gordo or something similiar would be better received than some of the things i've heard him called over the years, I'm thinking of a word scrawled on a floor tom by a certain rhythmatist.....

I might be a litle disrespectful but I don't think there is anything wrong with being a bit disrestctful to a public fiigure like Sting here on a site of fans of another performer.

There may be nothign that divides this commuinity as much as views toward Sting and those who do not like him should feel free to express a lack of respect here. We should always be careful of hurting feelings but a I will support Nutters rights to be disrespectful of Malgordo.
