TOP 20 drummers of all time!!

Postby blueseattle on 21 Feb 2007 14:11

To me, I always thought Taylor Hawkins followed Dave Grohl's footsteps too much... and it's always been, well, Dave could do it better.

But I still love the guy.

Deciding that when i put my list up in no particular order was pointless, I'm here to make it right.

Stewart Copeland - (The most complex drummer of the bunch. No body uses the cymbals better and is 100% unique, a one of a kind.)
Buddy Rich - (Lightening fast, no one can keep up with him and he never misses a beat)
Keith Moon - (Better in the studio than live. Revolutionized the all-around drummer with great fills and use of each drum. No one did it until he came around)
Neal Peart - (Smooth as ice, quick and great fills. The best double kick bass drummer in rock)
Terry Bozzio - (Hard to watch play with all his twitching and twisting behind the set. Amazed he doesn't throw himself off beat. He was better in Missing Persons than Zappa. You got to see him use his skill.)
Chaz Chandler - (Jimi Hendrix. Just listen to "Fire". His style complimented Jimi's guitar style perfectly)
Omar Hakim - (Saw this guy play with Sting on his first and only good album and tour and he impressed the hell out of me from the get go. Love the sound of his drums and great style. If you've ever seen him play "I burn for you" live, you'll know)
Dave Grohl - (This guy can jam! Quick hands and another drummer who loved to use the cymbals.)
Carl Palmer - (One of those drummers who made it look effortless. Avant Gard.)
Tre Cool - (Not given enough credit. If you listen to the entire "American Idiot" CD you'll get a better appreciation for him. Never stops and uses great, suptle intricacees throughout.)
Clem Burk - (Blondie/Love watching him play. Distinct. Plays with his drum heads flat and beats the hell out of them with a smile on his face. Plays a simple set. Quick.)
Alan White - (Yes/Another drummer that doesn't get his due. another An avant gard type of drummer. Sounds like a classically trained percussionist.)
Ginger Baker - (Great rock and blues mixed drummer, perfect for the his generation. BTW, Clapton sucks!)
John Bonham - (Never really saw what was so great about him. Page was the influence in the music, not Bonham. But, I have to give him some justice.)

That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

I <3 Meg White too but am always hesitant to bring her up since I hang out on some drummer sites where she is the target of much grief (no independence, being most frequently cited) by the "artistes" heheh

Hahaha :) Well, after getting discouraged about how much my bass foot stank yesterday I 'cheered' myself up by watching a bunch of youtube vids of like 4-12 year olds who (to parap. Stewart's phrase) could beat me up and take my lunch on the kit, soo playing like a 5 yr. old, dunno what that means (giggle) The Tony Royster at age 12 just makes me want to throw in mah sticks :)

Chas Chandler was not Jimi Hendrix's drummer. He was the producer. Mitch Mitchell is who you're thinking of.

Gina- did you see the Simpsons episode earlier this season with the White Stripes and Bart the drummer? That made me smile at least. Also, some Dr. Shoal's foot powder gets rid of the bass foot funk we all detest.

Yeah, I hear you blueseattle, but it's gotta be hard to fill shoes that big! Dave rocks! He had William Goldsmith in the band before Taylor, and he's no slouch on the kit at all. He didn't last too long, and never got to record a single lick in the studio....at least Taylor can claim that with 'In Your Honor'. I think Will may not have been RAWK enough for Dave's taste though....just a guess.

OH, there was a 4 foot tall jazz drummer that Ken Burns featured in his Jazz series also-- I can't remember his name-- maybe Tiny...

Whoever made this list

Postby wrenhour on 22 Feb 2007 00:28

doesn't know anything about playing the drums. How can you not have Steve Gadd? Hello? Stew should be higher up on the list as well. This person obviously doesn't know jazz which is where the real drummers come from in the first place. I can come up with a list of 20 that only includes a few of these guys. This is a rock drummer list folks.
