Hi ppl,

This is my first post here (thanks admin).

I had almost forgotten about Stuart Copland until he appeared on the Elvis Costello show with the Police (I loved the way he got a better response from the audience than the others).

I was reminded of my old worn-out cassette of The Rhythamist, and am now seeking it out to re-own and enjoy all over again [i]"Theres a lesson hear you see, and the point will soon be clear to me"[/i] (did I remember that right?).

Anyway, back to the topic in hand.. what other Copland albums are closest in sound and style to The Rhythamist?

I know I can systematically buy every album Copland has been on, but I thought a slightly more directed approach would be a better start to my re-discovering Stuart.

Something that sounds like 'The Rhythmatist'? Hmmm, I don't sincerely think there is something that might sounds like that recording in Stewart repertoire, as the project was quite unique. Gizmo is a band that has some african vibes in a few tracks, a litte more pop and rock I have to admit, but there are no recordings around (Gizmo is a side project by Stewart, you can watch a live track on our multimedia section).

I'm sure some other forumers (ah, by the way, they are all crazy, don't worry, but they are all great people), will give you some more suggestions.

A remaster of The Rhythmatist was just released last year or the year before, so there's a brand spankin' new copy available out there for you to enjoy.

There are others out there far more knowledgeable on this topic than I, so hopefully they'll have some more productive thoughts; but like Giovanni, I'd be hard-pressed to recommend anything similar to The Rhythmatist as it's kind of its own category. Gizmo's out, as he said, and there aren't other African-based albums specifically (unless I'm blanking right now). In terms of a particular sound/culture blended with a Western or pop aesthetic, there are variations such as some of the Rapa Nui soundtrack (though half of that is more orchestral) or the La Notte Della Taranta album. All very different in sound and style, but similar (sorta) in background idea.

Something percussiony and from a similar era as the Rhythmatist would be the Rumble Fish soundtrack -- again, not a match, but of a similar time and an album that is highly praised. I think, in addition to The Rhythmatist, Rumble Fish is the SC desert island soundtrack for a lot of people.

You might want to look into the Stewart Copeland Anthology (also released either last year or the year before) to get your feet wet. It's a kind of sampler plate of Stewart's music through the years, and something on it might strike your fancy.

Welcome Wolis. I'd endorse DirtyMartini's advice to get the Anthology. It has proved a useful thumbnail sketch of the 15 years I missed before stumbling blindly into this 'private little site'.

Oh - and by the way, I disagree with Giovanni (sorry Gio). People here aren't crazy, just a little over-enthusastic now and again.

Rumble fish soundtrack seems a bit expensive in comparison.. I will ponder this further.

Now heres a question, no one mentioned the Equalizer soundtrack.. just overlooked or is there something I should know about it?

As you can tell by my nom de plume, I've always felt The Rhythmatist was in a class by itself. You might give The Leopard's Son a listen, though. It's got that African, animal thing going on.

Hey wolis - I suspect that The Equalizer soundtrack hasn't been mentioned because your jumping off point was a search for things akin to The Rhythmatist (bugger - that is still hard to spell. Anyone else hankering for a new SC recording with a title that trips easily off the keyboard?). I've not heard the whole thang (like you, I'm playing catch-up), so I can only suggest you start another topic and see what opinions people come up with.

And thank you sir/madam (I have no idea what gender a wolis is) for sending me back to the anthology for the first time in a year or more. It is a wonderfully eclectic ride. I hope it gets to you soon!

I agree with Samburusunset that the Leopard Son is the closest to the Rhythmatist with its African rhythyms, although there is no other Stewart work like the Rhythmatist. That more than anything else make me follow Stewart's solo career.

And I also wore out the cassette tape, especially side 2. So happy that the CD was re-released recently.

I just wish the movie (which is quite silly) would be released on DVD.

I'm not sure I'd agree with The Leopard Son as comparable with The Rhythmatist. Maybe it's the violins throwing me, but it has such a different, orchestral sound to it that I have trouble putting the two together. But I do admit that any comparison to the Rhythmatist is destined to fail, my own comparisons included, so it's pretty subjective. I personally do like LS, so I certainly agree that think it's worth a listen.

Does iTunes work for you? You can get Rumble Fish on iTunes for $9.99 -- at least in the US store. I honestly don't know if it changes when borders and large bodies of water are crossed.

If this is indeed the first time you've been made aware that the Rhythmatist is a Full Length Feature Film, well then you're in for a wild ride!! It's...ummmmm....well - how can I put this? It's Stewart - so I love it. And it makes me want to yell "Pygmy babies!!"

I'm dying to know - did you order your new copy of the Rhythmatist on CD or cassette?
