(Apologies for the random tutelage, Copelanders -- just easier here than trying to explain in 140 characters over there.)
Bongo, if you want to make sure someone sees that you're replying to them/their message specifically, you'll want to use the "reply" button: when you hover over a particular post, there are two options on the right: a star and a return arrow (arrow pointing to the left). Click on that arrow, and you'll see that the person to whom you are replying (@jeancwilson, etc) will appear in the box at the top. When you type in your message in that box and hit "reply," that message will appear on the receiver's page, as well as a reference link so they know which message you are responding to.
If you just want to get particular people's attention, you can ignore that arrow link and just type @username (@kmwalsh, @Scottsg, etc.) before your message, and again what you say will show up on their page and they'll know for sure that it was directed at them.
(@ basically means "Yo, dumb ass! I'm talking at you!")
If you just want to talk to the world, skip the @ and just type.
