Hugh padgm is this great producers and ghosts production wise is worse than the first three albums.
????

Ghost and Synchronicity are still considered benchmark albums for audio production!

I love the fact that each album has a distinct flavour to it. You get everything from extremely budget conscious and basic, to larger than life, and artistic minimalism.

The change that many people sense is that for Ghost and Synchronicity they weren't all playing together at the same time for basic tracks. The later albums were more "constructed" using lots of overdubbing, as opposed to the more straight ahead live feel on the earlier albums.

Sting clearly forced the approach to recording the songs differently as he was doing all the composition and arranging ahead of time. The later albums have a lot less "filler" as well.

I think both approaches work. Synchronicity is by far the strongest album song wise. Regatta is the best "band" album. Ghost rules as the best "drum sound" album. And even though the band thinks Zenyatta was a bunch of filler....that was my first Police album and I think it just has an amazing polished "pop" sound that is just so unique. Outlandos is cool, but doesn't contain enough "signature" sound for me.
Was I the only one bummed that he didn't wail on those sparkly blue tubes of beauty during the Grammy's OR the Police Rehearsals?!
No...I was all jazzed when I saw 'em at the Whisky, thinking he'd go to town. But he's leaving us begging for more. (For the record, I do miss the miscellaneous objets d'art he used in Oysterhead, too...)

Don't kill me guys, but another vote for Zenyatta. Because I frigging love "Canary," "Suitcase" and "Bombs."

As much as I love the other albums, I had to go with Ghost.

The drum sound is so awesome.

From the begining intro of Sprits to the full out rockon of Demolition, the one take master of one world, to the thunder in Darkness.

A close second is Regatta.
A mind full of useless information.

No waaay! Zenyatta! That's the album I spent countless nights falling asleep to, memorizing every little ghost note and hihat hit. At least for me Zenyatta is the penultimate "Stewart Copeland Drum Sound". I'd be curious as to what Stewart thinks! (hint hint).

Stewart's said in interviews his favorite is 'Regatta.' Which makes sense, since as someone else pointed out, nearly half the songs on it are his...(he's also said his favorite Police track is either 'Message' or 'Can't Stand Losing You.' This was a while ago, though...)

The Police turns on audiences when they played:

Can't Stand Losing You mixed with Regatta D'Blanc...

And maybe will be cool if they mix songs from their 5 masterpieces, and b sides too.

Maybe I am asking for too much :?

Well I have to agree that Zenyatta is very cool and the dry drum sound is perfect for that album....but I think even Stewart agrees that GITM and Synch took his drums to the next level.

Quote from Stewart on Recording at AIR studios:
Copeland says that engineer/producer Hugh Padgham was ineffectual when it came to the creative battles, but what he was good at was he knew where to put the microphone. He got a big sound. He got the ambient recording of the drums, but this is a perfect example of where putting the microphone in the right place clashed with making the band dynamic work: The big studio that George Martin built [AIR Montserrat, in the Caribbean] was at one end of the building, and I was upstairs in the old house in the dining room, all by myself with a television monitor connecting me to the studio downstairs across the way.

The first thing you have to do when you record music is lay down a drum track, but we were making it up as we went along, and I wasn't in the room with them. So, instead of finishing playing and going, Hey, that was good there, and that went there, there is silence. I can't hear what one of them is saying unless one of them presses the talk-back button. They aren't pressing the talk-back button, but I can see that they are talking and I assume it's bad. The drums sounded incredible because that was definitely the place to get the best sound out of the drums. Inarguably, the drums sounded brilliant in that room.

'Zenyatta' is my favourite but I would not survive a Police set without hearing "Message in a Bottle" or "Beds too Big Without You".... and I want to hear "It's Alright for You" !!
Agreed. Though to hear the guitar lick during De Doo Doo Doo would be heaven incarnate. I would also love to hear Andy do some instrumental jamming. So Zenyatta for me.

Hi everyone, another new member here! So for my first post I'll cast a vote for Zenyatta. And if they were to actually do all of Zenyatta in concert, throw "Friends" in there too. Let Andy sing a number!

Welcome Vince! There's something familiar about that .gif...

I didn't vote since it's not an official poll, but it is an interesting question. Primus has done this bit too. I don't really expect it to happen on this tour, but i also didn't this tour to happen in the first place, so who knows?

I guess i have to shamelessly shill for a live Masoko treatment, so i pull for the first album. Every other song on it has been done live, even Sally, so it's high time!

Well, on the 'Outlandos to Synchronicities' vid, both Stewart and Andy said that 'Message' was their favorite Police tune...Stingo voted for 'Walking on the Moon'. I had read in a Bass Player magazine article years before that his hero, James Jamerson I believe, gave him a compliment on that bass line so that's probably why!
