Empty,

Don't give up on me yet. I'm still looking at an LA extension through Tuesday morning as a possibility, just like Conroy.

It is just still too early to sort it all out yet. I ran a MAJOR event in NY just last week and returned to houseguests that I'm still recuperating from. And, had two gigs already this week.

I'm hoping to play in La Jolla Cove Saturday AM/early afternoon, and head north thereafter. Gotta swim La Jolla Cove!

I might show up too. Just gotta get stuff sorted on award miles & junk. How far *is* the drive from LJ to LA?

Lynne - rumor has it there may be a group doing some sort of sea kayaking, but I'm still gonna look into info on the snorkeling. (I'd kinda like to dive, but I really don't relish the thought of hauling around 50+ lbs of gear to only be wet for a couple hours.) I'll post once I find out. If Saturday AM works for you, it'll work for me.

(Story is parking at LJ Cove well and truly sucks, so it behooves you to find an outfitter that'll run a shuttle. Tho I guess we *could* just climb down the steps & you know, jump in, if we're willing to get there early.

I *will* bring an underwater camera of some stripe. Probably not my 15-lb Nikon rig w/external strobes, but I may bring the Canon one.)

I am up for kayaking (have been doing it for years), swimming, or snorkeling. I can bring my wetsuit, and am happy to just climb down and jump in. I have a couple of triathlete folks I can ask about how best to negotiate the logistics. So I'm totally flex -- whatever works, count me in! But even if we kayak, I may still want to find a way to get the swim in (it's kind of a triathlete rite of passage).

So, I guess we're staying Thurs and Friday night and driving back to LA Saturday afternoon?

I need a new wetsuit!

Hey kids, just a bump because I'm reading some things on Google when doing searches like "la jolla" and "snorkel" and "scuba" that have me a little concerned. Also in some threads on a couple of scuba forums I frequent.

Now. You all know that I'm the last thing from an alarmist when it comes to predatory sealife - for months here I had an avatar featuring myself with four 8-foot reef sharks. But I have to tell you, one thing I tell people all the time (your likelihood of seeing a great white in-water is next to zero - which is true for most warm-water reefs) is maybe not going to hold when considering colder water and an area where there's lots of food (sea lions - apparently there's a children's pool near LJ that features more of them than is usual for the region). I'm also considering the fact that Aug - October is "in season" for whites in that area - they're migratory, long story.

For the record, snorkeling is more dangerous than diving, and unfortunately kayaking isn't entirely risk-free. Of course, I'm willing to listen to reason from folks who are more intimately acquainted with the area than I - local divers, surfers - I'm just not sure I'm personally gonna get in the water until I talk to folks in the local dive and surf shops and get some two cents. Maybe Mudder Queen or other locals can weigh in.

Just trying to explain why I personally am being a little more hesitant about water-related activities than usual. Email with any thoughts of course.

I'm driving down, so I am just going to follow everyone else. Divemistress sounds the most knowledgeable. Anyone who wants to squeeze into my dented Dodge Caravan is welcome to come with. I'm down with whatever hotel everyone else is staying at, happy to bunk up and definitely plan to go to LA. I am SO looking forward to this; sounds better every time I check the site.
