URGENT HELP FOR STEWART - WHO TOOK THESE PICS?

How much should I ask?

Postby SambucaSubaru on 11 May 2009 21:15

Well, I got an e-mail from Harper Collins today requesting permission to use the picture I took:
I'm writing to confirm whether the attached photo was taken by you, and, if so, to request permission to use the photo in Stewart Copeland's forthcoming memoir, Strange Things Happen: A Life with The Police, Polo, and Pygmies. The specific photos I am referring to are attached.

Unfortunately, we are working with a limited budget for the art in this book. What price per picture would you propose if we requested World English (English language only) rights for both the hardcover and paperback editions (with an estimated print run of 25,000 each)? This would also include use in all media, and in the advertising, publicity and promotion thereof.
I'm thinking that mostly what I want is an autographed copy of the book and a photo credit -- and maybe a token payment. But how much? $25?

it's up to you
I'm a much cheaper guy - I always work for free
(although Stewart will earn money with our photos, but he would, too, if those pictures were not in the book)

With a bunch of reserved seats for your bestest friends!

Can't you just write back and request a signed copy and a photo credit? They may insist on paying you something for tax purposes, tho....
On Google - site:stewartcopeland.net "your keyword here" - thanks DM!!

Compensation update

Postby SambucaSubaru on 12 May 2009 16:03

Thanks for your thoughts. Demanding a local gig from The Man is a great idea, but it seems a little ... how shall I put it? ... grandiose. ;-)

SamburuSunset, who is a budding young drummer, suggested getting her a complimentary drum lesson in exchange for the rights. Maybe, if they need the rights for foreign editions, we can re-visit that idea.

Dietmar puts me to shame for even thinking about compensation, since he works for free and all. What can I say? When fate drops a gift in my lap, I'll take advantage of it. But Dietmar *did* get me to moderate my grasping nature.

So here's the deal: I proposed, and Harpers agreed, that in exchange for rights to use the picture I get a photo credit, and a copy of the book inscribed to me by Stewart. They tell me that they're now in the midst of production, and expect to have the books by September or October. (Their website shows a release date of October 6 -- just in time for SamburuSunset's birthday...)

Which, BTW, is October 11, if you want to start planning now.

Aw sweet! I can't wait for this book. Steven Tyler is also publishing a book with Harper Collins this fall. I'm currently reading the Aerosmith autobiography, and it is hilarious! So far it's still a runner up to Wild Thing, but a pretty close second. Those guys are nuts, lol. Yeah, we bought tix for Aerosmith at Jones Beach. So much for boycotting LiveNation/Ticketracket.
yo!!
