It's going to make more money in it's first week than any other Trek did in it's entire run.

The movie has surpassed these projections. $72.5 million for Friday to Sunday. If you include the Thursday night showings, the movie made $76.5 million in the opening weekend. Paramont had projected a $50 million opening. That's what good reviews will do for you - currently 95% in the Tomatometer. It even beat The Dark Night's record for opening weekend for an Imax movie despite Dark Night's advantage - having portions actually filmed in with Imax cameras.
I was going to rant about how people should NOT see blockbuster films in so-called IMAX format, but I will leave that to another day. But seriously, don't. You are just telling a once great company that you will accept an inferior product if you do.
Also, so the only the three I know that have a Brian are Sting, Stewart, and Spock. Is having your name starting with an "S" some sort of requirement?

My best friend growing up (and a Stewart fan) is named Brian and even then I made that misatke.

It's pretty darn good. I've seen it twice already and I'm no Star Trek fan, nor even a movie buff. So it's obviously achieved it's goal of pulling in the non trekkies =)
Plus I'm a sucker for continuity and after doing some research, this one rates pretty well perfect in the reboot context of things.

From a fan's point of view, someone who knows most of the details of the story of Trek, who has seen even Spock's Brain multiple times I don't see how they could have made a better movie to restart the franchise.
I have not been that blown away by a sci fi movie since I saw The Matrix.
Definitely up there, even right next to Khan, First Contact

i concur. the genius of it is that they not only reinvented the franchise, the reinvented whilst still connecting it to the old school series as a legitimate sequel. freaking marvelous film.

OK, dammit. It's been out for three days. I'm starting in with the (mild) spoilers.
Right as the movie opens, and you see the ship? And the noises are the frigging sickbay sounds from Original Trek?

Man. I'm really impressed with this flick. And with Abrams - I thought sure it'd be some big bonanza type film with nearly no connection to the original series.
As it is, I'd agree with Throb - one of the best sci-fi flicks, all on its own, of the last 20 or so years.
