Thanks pfan for the photo and the bump. If you go to the Harper site, pfan's picture is now what you see as the cover.
Cover Revealed...round two...ding...and there's the bell...
Honestly, I don't think this cover should cause much controversy. But gong knows I've been wrong before.
Anyway, I do like this cover a lot. The title reverberating out of the drum is a cool idea. However, it's a little confusing to read. We have the advantage of knowing the title ahead of time. Somebody seeing the book for the first time may have trouble figuring it out. Polo and Pygmies are just kind of hanging there. Nonetheless, the purpose of a book cover is to capture the potential reader's attention and convey an idea of what the book might be about. This cover does that admirably in my opinion. (It even accomodated those awful bullet things, the scurge of punctuation, in a way that doesn't make me apoplectic.) ETA: On closer inspection with cleaner glasses I now realize that the bullets are gone in favour of conventional, reliable, adorable commas. Serial no less. And sadly, this is all making me giddy.
The book now has a Twitter and a face book page. Let the hype campaign begin.
