I saw it, too, and it is [b]excellent![/b] All the humor of the original, with the production values of the later series, and great casting. If you're even remotely a Trek fan, you'll love it.

JESUS X. CHRIST IN A HANDCAR. It was *stupendous*. That kid they have playing Spock deserves an Oscar. I'm nearly serious.

OK, I'm gonna have to sit on my hands not to type spoilers, but the only complaint I have is that some of it is shot with a very shaky cam, and I got a little seasick. But overall, I loved it so much I'm gonna go see it again ASAP, hopefully at the local IMAX.

"William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk in the original series and in seven of the subsequent movies, was not interested in taking a cameo role but wanted a larger part. "One of the problems was that Captain Kirk had been killed off in the seventh Star Trek movie and we didn't know how to bring him back because we wanted to honour the canon of Star Trek." Shatner declined an offer to meet with his successor, 28-year-old Chris Pine, who plays the young Kirk, but wrote him a letter wishing him well."

LOVED the movie. LOVED. IT. 5/5 on the EQ meter. Sure to please any hardcore Star Trek fan, and I suspect non-fans will enjoy it pretty much as well. Funny. Great action. Well paced. Very good story. The casting is spot on. I was quite concerned about the casting of Simon Pegg as Scotty, but he was terrific. I personally liked Dr. McCoy quite a bit. Great ensemble from Sulu to Chekhov to Uhuru (pant pant) to . . . well, everyone.

Ha! Yep. Personally I wouldn't have expected myself to regard Spock as an object of hotness, but sweet Jesus, you can hardly help yourself. I think I'm still mopping up drool.

I read yesterday in WashPost that Shatner wasn't in the flick because his agent held out for more money. Read & weep:

Figured the weak point would be J.J. Abrams' tendencies toward all flash w/no substance and assumed the storyline would be asinine...but after having read early reviews I went into this thing with pretty high expectations. Even then, what can I say - the flick pretty well had me in its thrall within the first few seconds due to some clever Foley work.

OK, still no spoilers. Come on, kids - go see it so we can talk about it

You know, I didn't recognize Karl Urban for the first ten minutes of onscreen time. He did a great! job. I'll agree the quality of the acting was the film's major strength.

Gonna go see it on IMAX one night this week...and just preordered the new Blu-Ray release of all the prior ST flicks, that's coming out Tuesday....(already own the full Original Trek series on DVD natch )

Mrs njp and I saw it today and just loved it!

What a great mix of honoring the past while having a plot and characters you care about based on now, not the past. Plus a great deal of humor without veering into parody (although it came close a few times). A great balancing act is really what this does.

Now we are big fans of Trek. A sign of that is that we have seen probably the worst episode of the original series, Spock's Brian, several times. So we can from a dedicated fan perspective.

This movie is right up there with the best of the Trek movies such as Wrath of Khan and First Contact.
