I know Stewart thinks jazz is crap, but I thought Max Roach was pretty great when I saw him.

Right now I'm listening to a lot of Green Day, so Tre Cool is on my list...although you certainly can't say he doesn't break a sweat!
On Google - site:stewartcopeland.net "your keyword here" - thanks DM!!

lol@the whole 'my dad can beat your dad up' mentality.

I can't believe I forgot to include Budgie, along with Brzezicki he's probably the other unsung drummer of rock music. Budgie always came up with the right part to serve the song... I think more people should try some Siouxsie and the Banshees from like '83 and up, they'd be suprised at the quality of the music, I think.

Omar Hakim too, there are points in the "Bring on the Night" video that gave me goosebumps, and it wasn't because of the guitar solos. I am not familiar with the rest of what he's done tho...

Oh yes, another drummer I've been getting into lately is Chris Adler from Lamb of God. I've been rediscovering my love of metal lately, and that guy is utterly insane!

Also, let's not forget Matt Cameron from Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. You know a drummer is gifted when he plays odd time signatures and you don't even notice it! For straight up rock and roll drumming, he is definitely one of my favs!!

I forgot to mention the author, but yes Sockii 'Moon' by Tony Fletcher is the one. When I first picked it up, I thought there is no way that a biog on a drummer could be this long....there must be a ton of filler, but no sir. I couldn't put it down, it was just way too engaging.

Music and drummers are a funny thing. You could ask me who my top 10 bands or drummers are, and it will change from week to week depending who's in heavy rotation at the time....

Chester Thompson (Weather Report & Genesis)

Check out the links section "from 20 top drummers."

Now tell me these guys should not be on that list.

Funny, I am the same way about Neil Peart, I admire his skill very much. His music was great early on but they kinda lost me after a while. Not to mention the guitar sound changed over time into a total Andy sound (IMO).

Great drummer but not one of my favs, too technical, need emotion, I like it old school...cause I'm old.

#1 - Buddy Rich
#2 - Stewart Copeland
#3 - Barrett Deems (Louis Armstrong)
#4 - Carlton Barrett (The Wailers)
#5 - Steve Jordan.

Just my opinion, they are all awesome, really.
Cheers.

I am totally agree with you... Neli Peart is so technicall without the emotion and fresh of Stewart drumming skills... besides guitarist of "Rush" have lot of Andy's guitar style

I'd vote for Alex Van Halen over Tommy Lee.

The drummer of "TOOL" is really good too!

Actually, though, I'll say this - Tommy is a great showman. I saw him a couple weeks ago on the Supernova tour (don't laugh at me, I liked them!), and he was a blast to watch in person. He does know how to put on a performance. I wouldn't put him anywhere near the Top 20 Drummers of all time, but I wouldn't mind going to see him play in person again, just for fun.

I don't watch him a lot, but what I have seen...he is pretty good though, I mean it's a certain style.

It is showbiz afterall!

I've seen the video of him and Pam. He is a great showman! :)

Stewart may be a better drummer, but can he honk the boat horn while having both hands on the wheel? :)

Also another drummer I freaking love: Chad Smith RHCP who, I am convinced, in Will Farrell's long lost rocker twin! Topper Headon, too (as in one of favs, not another twin)

A shout out to some rocking grrrl drummers:

Cindy Blackman (Lenny Kravitz)
Sandy West (Runaways, rest in peace, love)
Moe Tucker (VU)
Sam Maloney (Hole)
Kate Schellenbach (Orig. for Beaties)
Gina Schock (GoGos), just too cute :)
