I saw the Stanley Clarke Band tonight in Alexandria Virginia (Stewart's birth town). I tried to get Pluto and Conroy to go but they weren't able to.
It was a short set of only 5 songs but it was very good.
Stewart's ex-Animal Logic and other projects collaborator is a very skilled bassist. Played all of it on stand up bass (or whatever the term is for the un-electric big bass).
He played 2 tunes from Return to Forever and 3 others, at least one of which is brand new. I had hoped he would play School Days but he didn't.
He will be n NYC the next 2 nights (3/17 & 3/18) at the Blue Note. So jazz fans in the big apple should consider going.

OK - this one isn't going to be to everyone's taste, but here goes.
Eagles of Death Metal.
Silly name? Yup. Sunglasses on stage? (yup, a bit daft). But that's the most sweaty, enjoyable couple of hours I've spent in a long time.

Nutshell review of the Philly weekend extravaganza:
Friday Night: Oddity Faire @ The Electric Factory
Kind of a meh. Of the opening bands, we missed O'Death, rather liked Secret Chiefs 3 (how can a band that goes out in monk robes to the Halloween theme song be bad?), did not get Saul Williams at all. Les' set was, sad to say, kind of a letdown. Vespa and I both thought his last tour was vastly superior, from the variety of the set played to the band (Gabby La La was SORELY missed!) It got kind of monotonous, the sound mix was not so great, and the crowd was annoyingly packed so we couldn't even get anywhere near a decent view for most of the night. I know a few folks left early.
In contrast, Stan Ridgway at World Cafe was AMAZING. Vespa and I LOVED his set, loved the whole vibe, only thing that was kind of a drag was his band sorely needs a live drummer. Was beyond cool hearing "Don't Box Me In" live and his version of "Ring of Fire" was terrific. Some great older songs like "Call of the Wild", "Mexican Radio" (really amusing version), "Camouflage", "I Wanna be a Boss". Plus he did a meet-and-greet after the show and is as engaging and warm off-stage as he is on. I will definitely make a point to see him again anytime he comes through Philly or the surrounding area.

I agree with sockii 110%. I had more fun at the Les Claypool show showing off my sound activated LED Equalizer t-shirt than I did with the performance on the stage. People kept coming up touching it, yelling at it and asking to take pictures of it in action.
And Stan was awesome at World Cafe Live on Saturday. Definitely check him out at a live show and buu his new CD when it comes out this summer. Everyone song he played from it last night was fantastic!!!!

Yeah, it's just him, his wife (I believe?) on keyboards (and drum machine) and a second guitarist. So the cheesy drum machine kinda mars the effect of some of the songs, but in general I found I was concentrating so much on his lyrics and his voice that everything else was pretty secondary.

Stan had a most excellent percussionist last tour but this is just the trio minus him. Not sure what happened...

He'll be back around in the fall after Europe and the new cd is out end of June-ish.
Songs I remember: a preview of three from the upcoming album but I can only remember two titles: Desert of Dreams and A Town Called Fate.
I Want to be a Boss, Train of Thought, Big Heat, Camouflage, Beloved Movie Star, a tex-mex redo of Mexican Radio which was complete own, DBMI dedicated to Mickey Rourke, a cover of Dylan's Lenny Bruce dedicated to George Carlin, Ring of Fire, Lonely Town, Big Dumb Town...
Pietra sang a song I think was called Eve's Angle or something like that...
I know I'm missing some important ones but that's what I can recall!

A request for info. Troy van Leeuwen's newish band Sweethead are playing in London next week. I know they played a bunch of shows in the US - did anyone go, and if so, could I get an opinion?
(Normally I'd just take my chances, but I'll be disgruntling family members to attend, so want a steer on whether the goodness of the gig is likely to outweigh the grumbly-relative fallout!)

Gah!! Just found out Venus 3 (aka 3/5ths of REM...Buck, McCaughey, Rieflin) played a song w.Wilco the night in Athens the night before we saw them in Asheville....*dying*
Sheez. It was 'California Stars,' one of my less favorites (due to having heard it a million times and believing it to be inferior to other great tracks from the Mermaid Albums), but the thought of Pete Buck + Nels Cline onstage fills my little heart with joy...off to find the bootleg.
