I have three (!) versions of the Young Ones DVD sets
How come three, Krok?
Because it's one of my favorite shows, and because I had worn out my vhs tapes.
I have the original US issue, 'Every Stoopid Episode', and the recent issues, "Extra Stoopid Edition" and "Complete BBC Series 1 & 2".
While the recent UK/US editions are more complete, they all have differences, even in the same reissue year. Some are missing musical performances (see above), some are missing musical bits (Neil singing *5* words from "The Sounds of Silence" in the tub is cut), and some jokes have been edited out (like the humping Teddy Bears in Rik's bed).
But the biggest difference is that the recent editions have been 'filmized', essentially using a filter on the mastering process that makes the original videotape look more like film rather than video...I guess they felt thet needed to make it look 'modern' if it is rebroadcast (They also did this to a recent reissue of Red Dwarf on DVD). And to be honest, it looks like sh*t. Both colors and movement resolution are compromised, as well as making the show look less 'in your face'. I would much rather watch the show as it was originally shot, even in the glare and harshness of 1982 BBC Studio video-camera technology, than this phony attempt at cleaning up the image. I want to see the spotty twerps in all their disgusting glory.
So that's why I still have the original US "Every Stoopid Episode" edition, even if parts are missing, since it did not have the film filter treatment done to it.
I seem to have found my way onto my soapbox somehow, but...well, you asked!
