Speculation on why there's not more Oysterhead

Postby policerule on 07 Apr 2009 14:55
I think that the way that Oysterhead can play again is for someone to finally point at a calendar, schedule a date they're all not already booked, and tell each of them to show up.
We need to speak with this person. :D

Haha. I'd suggest that you start with three assistants and a performance space, PRule.

When this thread came along I wanted to make a snarky comment about how Trey couldn't support both Oysterhead and his habit. But I thought that humor a bit too dark. Oops. Uhhh....
I listened to the Oysterhead record when it was released and thought it was crap.

Now I'm always reading what you people write and think about Oysterhead - so I just watched some clips on youtube.

You know what?
It's still crap.

Just exactly the kind of music I can't relate to.

Dietmar
I'm thinking that this is because Dietmar appreciates melody, which is not a prominent musical element in Oysterhead.

Also because Oysterhead's singing flat out SUCKS. Dietmar can sing sing better than everyone in the band. I've heard Dietmar harmonize on 'Walking on The Moon'. He's good. You've probably heard it, too. ;)
I'm a firm believer that if you don't like Les, you won't like Oysterhead. Period. With a few small exceptions, that album is his sound even on Stewart and Trey's song(s).
Les & Stew have a similar rhythmic sensibility and appreciation for the absurd that would make anything they'd do together really interesting to me.
Absofuckinglutely.
Well, I agree about the rhythm and sense of the absurd. Which is great. Maybe that's why Oysterhead doesn't really appeal to me. It's like a sandwich with two kinds of Mustard and no Mayo.

That said, I would be much more interested in Oysterhead with just about anyone BUT Trey in it. Or if they kept Trey, and got an actual singer.
Tell us how you really feel Dietmar!

I'm not an overwhelming fan either- I listen to it for the drums. If I had a chance to see them live, I wouldn't miss it though.
Word. I would definitely go. There'd be lots of Nutters! :)

Hey, not meaning to be really snotty, but has anyone else actually seen 'em live? I'm telling you. Some bands come thru from the recording, but some do a great live show and then it may not translate so well.

Tho I love GPO, man...I'm telling you. Watching that live set I lucked into was transcendent.

I suspect some folks will have other/different/more thoughts if they actually do play any more gigs.
On Google - site:stewartcopeland.net "your keyword here" - thanks DM!!

This is not too surprising to me. I see OH as being almost the polar opposite of everything the Police is about. However, I think the reason I like OH so much is because you get to hear a whole 'nother dimension of Stewart that you never hear when he's playing with the Police

Note:

I like mustard.

I also am confounded regarding how no one seems to like Trey's voice. He's not THAT bad, is he?

I'm in the same boat as most as seeing Trey as, if not the weak link, at least the member most lacking my interest. Also agree that Les and Stew's sensibilities are far closer to each other's than Trey's. It'd probably be a lot easier for them to team up on a new project rather than try to force Oysterhead into Trey's schedule.

Heh. This is probably all of why I like Oysterhead so damned much myself. Truly, singing "talent" is one of the least important things in my taste in music. I much prefer an "interesting voice" - or no voice at all - coupled with fabulously complex and interesting music than a great voice with nothing behind it. Even most of my favorite singer/songwriters don't have a "great" voice--I'm more interested in the words and everything else around them. When I got into the Police, it was not because of Sting's vocals, or even the melodies, but the uniqueness of the band's sound as a whole and then the drumming in particular.

The more I listen to Les and then go back and listen to Oysterhead, the more I completely agree with this assessment.

Mayo always makes me gag, but I can never have enough mustard on my sandwiches. Especially extra-spicy! ;)

Liar!

I've seen you in that Police fan documentary. Talking about how you were (gulp!) a Sting fan first. I kid....

It was funny, I was going to write Olive Oil, 'cause I hate Mayo, too.

Yeah yeah. Well, I make it no secret that it was "Dream of the Blue Turtles" that first got me interested, because it was different to my ears at the time as a teen growing up in a backwater town with no cable, no MTV and only two lousy local radio stations as about the extent of my exposure to current music. :P

As soon as I then got listening to the Police as a group, however...I was basically done with Sting solo. By the time Nothing Like The Sun came out, I could barely stand listening to it.

Lots of things get me first *interested* in an artist or a band. It's not necessarily what keeps me around and following their work for years/decades afterwards--or alternatively losing my interest with time as well.
