OT: Anyone else worried about being laid off?

Postby Johnny O on 13 Mar 2009 13:00

Well, since I work for PBS/NPR I am VERY worried. We have already had three rounds of layoffs since 2008 and everyone left had to take a 7% pay cut.

There does not seem to be any bailout money in President Pelosi's stimulous packages either...
I think the Western world has to realize that capitalism is as over as communism was exactly 20 years ago. To leave entire populations in the hands of stock brokers, glorified loan sharks, and a rotten banking/credit system is just so sick.
I'm reading the new Krugman book now and there's a lot of interesting background on exactly this topic. Although actually he goes into Latin America, Asia, and the 1995 Mexico crisis/NAFTA.

(Hey, where's Lynne these days? She's the only other person that ever explained any of these topics to me in a way my tiny brain could comprehend...think I'll drop her an email.)

The City of Denver is making its employees take a furlough day this month and I'm sure there will be more. But I'd rather be furloughed than laid off.

My biggest worry right now is the investment money I've been using to pay for grad school has taken a huge nosedive. I'm not sure I'll have enough to pay tuition.

First of all, what a cutie! :D

That's a good read. I read his website. I'm reading Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet by Jeffrey D. Sachs, and it's also very insightful/scary at the same time.
I just think the world is in transition: nothing is the same, and the people who were profiting from the decaying system want things to remain the same, but you cannot stop change. There are new needs on the planet: there is a new economy based on sustainable sources of energy and lines of production, organic food/skincare products, recyclable clothing, to name a few fields.
It is difficult to weather the transition: people must acquire new skills while being able to pay their bills the health system rebuilt from scratch, the housing market (which affects construction, timber, landscaping, appliances industries) should bounce back and the credit laws reviewed.

I grew up with the tenets that healthcare, studying, working and housing were rights, not privileges. Even if most of Western Europe has eventually imitated, in a way, the US System (not completely, thank goodness), I still believe that people there have a voice.

AWWWW BB! Is it just a feeling or were you officially warned??
Either way, Jah will provide.

There seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel, I hear.
Watched Bernanke's interview on 60 mins yesterday and found out it boosted Wall Street. He must have spoken in secret code.

Let's see what the next weeks bring.

BB: If it happens then I am sending you good vibes.

Personally, I am trying not to obsess about it but it definitely is in my thoughts. We have also had to take some furlough days (2 weeks before June) and our operations people are not in their happy places.
Found myself buying interview clothes the other day... just in case.

Not sure if anyone already talked about this, but I really enjoyed the recent interview with Jon Stewart and the CNBC guy. Shame on me for forgetting the guy's name & being too lazy to look it up. I really felt like Jon was speaking for me. 8)

Good luck to all. Stay grounded.
Jim Cramer. That was his name.
Saw that too (we get the Daily Show in the UK, although it is more 'The Previous Day's Daily Show). My concern is that - for all that I appreciate John Stewart's tendency to skewer stupidity/duplicity (and look forward to him doing the same to the current administration) - Mr Cramer (and his colleagues who didn't have the gumption to face the music) got called to account on Comedy Central.

I hope that remark doesn't cross the line re. appropriate posts here. For the record, I'm being pissed off about journalistic effectiveness outside Comedy Central, not party-political stuff.

And BB - know what you mean. 'cept I know I've got a garden shed with my name on it if all goes tits up. Hope you have a roof too, if the worst happens.

Shucks, BB. For what it's worth,[begin political rant] I'll gladly chuck a Vater at the back of a certain PM's head if the government doesn't come up with the needed funding for the CBC[end political rant].

When you say you can add Troubador to your resume, do you mean that you played at the club The Troubador or that you are a troubador? If you played there or are going to play anywhere in a troubador-like capacity, do tell. I'd love to support a fellow Nutter.

Bob Marley also said, "Come, let we chant down Babylon." It sounds like you're doing that in fine fashion, my friend. Keep the faith and keep the beat.

Jon Stewart wasn't the first to call out CNBC but he's able to generate a lot of publicity about it. Check out this article from the Huffington Post last month about Cramer's co-host Erin Burnett: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/adam-gree ... 63022.html

I feel for y'all. After lamenting being "stuck" in my "crappy" job for years, I'm beginning to see the security of it is looking pretty damn good right now.

Thanks Conroy - I hadn't seen that. I guess JS has the exposure to make it headline news (to the point where the NYT is kinda bitching about a comedian coming over all journalistic), whereas huffpost is often there earlier, but less loudly.

And yup jedsoon - know exactly what you mean. Don't know how it works in the states, but in the european union having 12 months' or more service makes a person harder to let go. Saw a post from a friend from here on facebook today, noting that their firm is getting many more applications from people without jobs than those with. The people with jobs are too scared to move right now.

It will pass - just hoping everyone emerges relatively unscathed.
