Band for support THE POLICE LIVE

Postby conroy on 20 Jan 2007 21:11
Surely it will be the bellydance allstars? or fiction plane?
I was thinking that, too, although Barbara, Ian's daughter, told me the last time I saw them in DC back in November that there is an offshoot of the Bellydance Superstars coming this year on a tour called Le Serpent Rouge featuring the Indigo. This troupe is more tribal and would include a live band, which I think would be a cool opening act for the Police reunion shows along with the Dares. Check them out at www.theindigo.net (I had to disable the pop-ups for that site to get the "ENTER" button to work.)

The Smiths or The English Beat would be awesome and so would BDDS but the Dares would be cool too. I also think Matisyahu, Incubus or the Foo Fighters would all appreciate the importance of the event.

Please no U2. It would steal our thunder, and tickets. Stay in Dublin guys!

Just saw this linked on a weblog:
What is curious about this is all the excitement. It should be very encouraging to Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland that, after 25 years, news of their reunion is causing a stir. It's possible that the renewed Police on tour would be the highest-grossing road show of all time, surpassing The Rolling Stones and even Paul McCartney's recent top-selling tours.

The big questions now are: Who will open for The Police, and will it be one group or many divided among different regions? Names being bandied about are The Fray, Evanescence and even Virgin's The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. But don't be surprised if Fiction Plane, the hot group piloted by Sting's son Joe Sumner, gets a slot or two as well.
Please, I'm begging: No Fray. No Evanescence...No low-blood-sugar easy listening music, period...
Well, if they would end up planning some concerts, I would do (but it would be almost impossible) an incredible line-up to make it an event bigger than ever...well, let's bring back all those bands that used to support The Police at that time....you know what I mean?

U2
REM
XTC
THE ALARM
GO-GO'S
BANGLES

and I would add some band from today such as...let me see...

RADIOHEAD (I sincerely don't like them but I would say they would perfectly fit the line-up)
EVANESCENCE (they remind me some of those darker bands of that time, I would add them)
FOO FIGHTERS
PEARL JAM (as well as Foo Fighters, they love The Police...I'm sure they would pay $$$ to be part of this line-up).

It could be a two-days Festival with The Police headlining both night! Sold out of course...something like San Bernarndino US Festival.

I would name a lot more bands...what would you add?

Ciao ciao
Giovanni

Ps.: it would be even better that LIVE AID 2... the first LIVE AID was unique
you DON'T LIKE RADIOHEAD?!?!?!? wow...... have you heard all their stuff? they'd be my vote, though I know they're pretty busy these days working on a new album.

red hot chili peppers would fit well with the police i think.

and tool. why? because they've got an amazing drummer, just as do the police.

I dunno, guys...I'm watching Green Day on VH1 Storytellers, and the guys could do a lot worse.

I remember reading an interview w/SC where he talked about dismissing them as a flash in the pan in an argument with his niece, and was happy to be proven wrong...

I saw 'em at Lollapalooza in 1995 and felt the same way: they'd be young kids who'd be terrible, and was just blown away. Aside from the fact that I adore the lyrical content of their new album, they sure wouldn't be boring to watch.

Green Day is one of the best acts I've seen live. And I've seen hundreds of acts.
I do NOT want U2 there!!

No offense to U2, I love U2, but have you ever tried to get tickets to one of the shows?

It's going to be difficult enough to get tickets without adding a group that has a huge fan base of their own wanting in.
I can't really picture anyone opening for The Police on this tour (besides the obvious Fiction Plane of course)... I DID read a few minutes ago on the Policetour.com boards where someone mentioned that if U2 were to open, it probably wouldn't be a tour, but a single concert staged at the GRAND CANYON, and that THE GRAND CANYON still couldn't hold that many people...

Am I the only one that thinks that there shouldn't BE an opening band? I mean, why bother, you know? Get the boys to play for an hour and a half, have an intermission, come back for another 2 hours...

That's what I'll pay money for.

Has anyone mentioned the Foo Fighters yet?

Seems a logical choice - what with Taylor Hawkins' Stewart fixation!

Hey there, you are remembering something Ian said on AUI. He was the one who said they were a flash in the pan and had a bet with his neice that they wouldn't last. I have no idea how I remember that, but I evidently need to get out more.

Then we'd have to fight all the Foo fans for tickets (even if it would be the best double-bill ever as far as I'm concerned!)

That said, I'd cast a vote for Taylor and his side band, the Coattail Riders. Those guys were awesome when I saw them last year and had a sound that would totally mesh with the Police, IMO.

That's funny Sockii, I was gonna say Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders too....haven't seen them live myself, but it'd be great exposure for a relatively unknown band. You couldn't go wrong with Green Day or the Foo for that matter, but it would make tickets be more scarce fo shizzle...

I think that the band support for The Police live concerts, depends on each different country they will play.
