Holy Shhhhostakovich!!!

Actually, I'm more surprised by the Gamelan Concerto than Ben-Hur. He's the perfect choice for chariot music.

But GAMELAN!!!??? I've been in a Gamelan ensemble. They don't use traditional notation. How's he gonna pull this one off?

zilboy, in the article on rhythm mag he says that they're using 2 gamelans (balinese and a chinese, possibly) that have been tuned to fit the 40 piece dallas symphony's pitch....

Well, Sting DID sing the Flintstones theme song on camera. I can't find it on YouTube but if you look at the "Bring on the Night" DVD it's in there. He knew all the words. In 1985 this was quite shocking to me :)
Whoa! I have been to 2 gamelan concerts here in the Bay Area and it's just fantastic music - I love it!! It can be sweet or powerful, especially if accompanied by Balinese dancing, which is one of the most graceful and beautiful.

Now that I know what a gamelan is, (Thank you dictionary.com) I'm with zilboy. I can't wait to hear this concerto. What an exciting project! I'll take a pass on Europe and save my money for a trip to Texas next year. I still think the Ben Hur thing will be outstanding and Stewart is the perfect choice for scoring it. I'll have to be content with the CD, which will be amazing.

It's no wonder Stewart has been so quiet here. With all these projects in the offing, he's probably busier than when he was on tour.
In Dallas, the only game that really mattered was in the word gamelan.

I do agree there: I can imagine Stewart's background as pretty appropriate, both for the sound and for the spectacle. It's the spectacle itself that threw me.

But I'm hugely surprised to read that this much-hinted-at concerto involves a couple of gamelans. Makes for an interesting and unexpected twist. I'm really looking forward to hearing this.

Though I'm still holding out hope for a gong concerto.

Well, everything I've read says gamelan is actually an ensemble of percussive instruments that includes a gong, so it sounds like you (we!) may be getting your wish!!

I just knew he couldn't walk away from that sucker!!

As for Ben Hur...wow! Hope you surprised yourself, Stewart, 'cause you sure have surprised me! Pretty intriguing!

Thanks for all the info, Jeff! Don't be a stranger!!

This is true! I'm just being picky.

I want typewriters next.

ETA: I would love to hear how this idea came about. I think it would be a scream to hear that a 6' symphonic gong had inspired an orchestral piece: "We had just kicked into 'Message In A Bottle' -- you know, the usual: gong, Andy, lights, flag, point -- and then it hit me: gamelan/symphony piece."
