Nirvana sounded like The Police (in some songs)

Before i read this question i was thinking about nirvana all day in relation to police. When sting mentioned my sharona in the rehearsals i was thinking that maybe the police could cover nirvana songs because of the similarity of the music. Andy and sting are big fans of nirvana. The interview that you listed is something i was aware and had read 12 years ago. And andy is interviewed on one of the nirvana cd's that you can buy in the shops. It would be interesting to see the end result of police covering a nirvana song. I wish someone had asked that in the press conference. I listen to nirvana and police all the time and there are huge similarities. In the drumming stewart is similar to david grohl, the quiet and loud verse and chorus. Sting could vocally handle a nirvana song.And the police are a three piece as well. Both bands are very hooky.

I think the police should cover "In bloom". I've been thinking about this all day even before i read this thread. How strange.
I'm not sure who i like best. I like both bands equally.

well cool, i'm glad someone else feels the same as me. i didn't know about Andy and Sting being Nirvana fans. I LOVE Nirvana. I *sort of* grew out of them after my teen years, but in the last year or two I've gotten BACK into them, and I love them just as much.

I drew some of those same comparisons back in the day. I had a tremendous enthusiasm for both groups that led to me taking a break from active listening and eventually coming back to those albums refreshed. If you had told me twelve years ago that i would pass on the Nirvana boxed set when it came out, i could never have believed you. I just burned myself out on them for a while, and had in fact bought a couple of bootleg box sets years before. Now my interest in them is growning again, after taking a long break. Great, high energy tunes!

It's ironic that my break from the Police was in the early-mid 90's, around the time Nirvana opeied me up to a wealth of (then) new music.

I'm glad to see people giving a shout out to David Lovering, also one of my favorite drummers. I've seen the Pixies twice - once in 1989, opening for Love & Rockets, and once last year at the Ryman - and they were a force of nature both times. Lovering kind of steals the show, like a certain other someone I can think of.

I think the comparisons to Nirvana are apt, too. I could never square Cobain's admiration for emo bands like the Raincoats with the ferocious rock and roll the band played, and have wondered over the years what other influence went into the mix. I can tell you about another fair comparison - I've met both Novoselic and Grohl, and they're both awesome fan-friendly guys.

Another drummer I've noticed lately is Georgia Hubley, of Yo La Tengo. She's not as flashy as Copeland or Lovering, but she's really steady and lends a great presence to the band's live set. I've been a fan of hers for years, but saw YLT a couple weeks back and was reminded of just how sublime she is.

What's really weird is that Dave Lovering did a really cool magic show that was the second act for Frank Black at the Black Cat here in DC a few years ago. He stuck electrodes into a pickle which caused it to glow a really cool color when he gave it some juice, but it really stank up the room. Dave hung out in the audience right in front of the stage while the opening act played and I was too damn shy to go up and say hi to him. He had his lovely wife )I think) with him and they made such a cute couple that I didn't want to intrude on their personal space.

The Police sound most like nirvana(nevermind) on zenyatta mondatta. I am willing to bet that this is cosplusisin's favourite album.

This is an interesting topic. Even though I don't see the resemblance, I have a comment to add.

I know Dave Grohl is a Police fan. I remember reading somewhere on the Foo's site YEAAAARS ago that he would pay $100 to see The Police reunite. That was when ticket prices were just getting out of this world for reunion tours.

By the way, Love Nirvana, Love Dave Grohl, love Foo Fighters. love love love. Did I mention I love Dave Grohl? Yeah, and when I first read Stewart's Dinner tale (before they were posted here on the board) I loved the story of him with the Foo's. That would be a dream come true to have seen that. sigh.

Yep. I'd go to some trouble to see a Foos/Police double set. One time in D.C. I saw a Hawkins/Grohl double drum-off set...is too much to wish for a trifecta (Hawkins/Grohl/Copeland)? Sheez. I would just die.
