OT - Root canal

Postby kimmy on 09 Feb 2009 22:25

Kiki....

So I think by now you know that if you have enough injections the root canal is fine! (they used a cinnamon smelling thing with me..... couldn't ask why coz I had my mouth full!!)

Just a warning for you afterward.......

I had a temporary filling in mine after waiting for the crown fitting and managed to crack my tooth....

The only thing then to do was have the tooth out! £500 for nothing!!

Just be REALLY careful with hard food afterwards!

Ha! Wish I'd seen this earlier. I've had seven (!) RC's...by now you know they're not that bad. What hurts is having to have one...the pain beforehand is worse by far.

(Yes, I do brush. I just have genetically bad teeth, and I went to a quack dentist when I was younger...my fillings got decay underneath them, thus all the work. Never, ever, economize on dentistry, is my advice.)

My tips: Just think about something else. My favorite mental scenario is imagining being at the beach instead of in the chair.

- It can take a pretty long time for your mouth to go dead - I need nearly 20 minutes sometimes. So don't let 'em rush you.

- The anesthetic will make your heart pound, so no coffee before your appt.

The upsides I have to all this dental work? Pretty high pain threshhold. No needle phobias, in contrast to Mr. Dive. I won't embarrass him by telling too many stories, but he has perfect teeth - and nearly passed out last year getting a tetanus shot. ;)

Ha Ha Dive..Imagine the beach instead of the chair.

Got me thinking bout a song...Some Beach by Blake Shelton. Funny song.

Especially the line. I sat in that waiting room seemed like all afternoon. The nurse comes out and says Docs ready for you. You aint gonna feel a thing. Well give you some novicane. Well fix you right up. Well
He stuck that needle down deep in my gum. He started drilling before I was numb...

OH hell no!!

Some Beach...somewhere.

LMAO. :D

Thank you, everyone...for all your tips and suggestions!

I'm going in on Friday for the procedure. My dentist isn't too sure I'll need it, so we'll see what the initial exam says. I'm crossing my fingers as I can't afford this as it is.

BUT...thank you for putting my mind to ease a little.

My dentist loves my teeth. He says I have really good teeth. But back in December, a back one started to hurt. No cavity, cracks or anything. The X-ray showed a little calcium deposit in the pulp of my tooth, known as a pulp stone. It's not very common. So...the root canal would be to fix that problem. I was put on an antibiotic to see if that helped. It did make it stop hurting...but it does this weird twing/numb thing that...doesn't seem right. But since it really doesn't hurt anymore...it just does a weird numb twinge thing every now and again, my dentist wants the endodontist to look at it before anything is done. He said he'd want pain and tears before he'd want a root canal done.

So...I'm holding out a wee bit of hope...but not letting myself get too excited at the prospect of, perhaps, not having the procedure at all. Because I'm pretty certain I'll still have to.

You guys are wonderful.

Sometimes stuff does sorta go away. Also, it's not always what they expect - I had some really horrific soreness once, like I could barely chew - and it turned out they had simply forgotten to file down a filling I got so that my bite would fit properly.

With all this, I have an appointment today myself for a filling. Sigh. Had a cleaning last week and they found a cavity. Haven't had one for a couple years, should have known I wouldn't get off forever.

Now if I can only manage to stop chewing ice. It's a really, really expensive hobby.

I have to see my dentist tomorrow morning for filling 2 cavities - first in years and I hate going.

Had a root canal treatment last year and it was the only time I wanted to go to the dentish because of all the nerve pains I had before. The treatment didn't hurt, but the teeth does feel a bit numb for some time afterwards.

Good luck!

Good luck with the dental visits, ladies.

I recently found myself trying to keep it together by thinking about watching 1/2 naked Sting on stage. It helped a bit.

The root canal went well. I took everyone's advice here to heart. I brought good tunes to listen to and did my best to relax.

The endodontist did a preliminary exam. She checked out the tooth in question and a few in front of it because (in her words) "teeth are stupid and don't have a brain." She poked at them, tapped them...no pain. She tested them forr sensitivity to cold. The first to did great. When she got to that back one...I couldn't feel it. So, she tried again. Still couldn't feel it.

So...the X-rays showed that the antibiotic did it's job and got rid of the pulp stone. However...the pulp stone killed off the nerves in that tooth. Dammit. So, the root canal had to be done to get the dead nerves out so that it wouldn't become abcessed. The procedure took an hour...and she said that the tissues in the tooth were still healthy and all...and kept reassuring me that I was doing great.

So...it's done. The numbness is still wearing off...and she gave me heavy-duty Ibuprofin to take over the next two days.

And I just have to be careful what I eat until they either do a permanant filling or a crown at my dentist's office. I'll call next week to see about getting in for that.

Thanks for the advice, the good thoughts...and the support.

I'm glad for you it's over, Kiki! (and so am I).
It's the fear in anticipation that hurts the most, I think.

glad to hear the dental visits for everyone have been good. No horror stories or massive pain involved. whew. I went in Monday for a polish and they filed down my Top front left tooth cuz it was 1/2 mm longer than the other one due to impact injury a few years back. I had got hit in the face 2 yrs ago by an ab lounge that was laying on the floor (not mine) at a friends house and just as I bent over to pick it up. The freaking thing came up and catapulted me across the room after hitting my mouth.

Now THAT FUCKING HURT LIKE HELL.

I am much better now.

Kiki... Glad it's over for the time and everything went well....

PLEASE be very careful with chewing on it.... it's very delicate and fragile... if you're not careful it will crack... and the only thing then is extraction...... (like what happened to me!)

Uhuh. Yup. Kiki. Until the permanent fix gets done, soup is your friend :-) So glad it went smoothly.
