Melanoma Int'l Foundation Safe from the Sun walk '09

Yo Nutters!

As you’ve probably already read on Sockii’s post, the walk is on April 5 this year. Our happy little group had a great time last year. What we lacked in numbers we made up for in enthusiasm. Plus we raised a fair bit of money (thanks to so many of you :D ) for the Melanoma International Foundation. So, it was a no brainer when the topic of whether we’d walk again this year came up.

We walked under the team name Friends of Leroy Coolbreeze. As most everyone knows Stewart’s beloved brother Ian lost his battle with melanoma in 2006. Thus we set up the Leroy Coolbreeze Fund for the contributions from our walk to go to.

Recently, Laurie, known to most of you as Copelandgirl_5, was diagnosed with melanoma for the third time. Betsy (aka Policerule) and I were talking about the walk in general and she suggested that we walk on Laurie’s behalf this year. A lot of the teams at last year’s event were walking in someone’s memory. While we think that’s a wonderful thing to do, it would be much more appropriate for us to focus our walk on celebrating life. Laurie was truly touched when we told her what we proposed and she’s fine with the idea.

We’ll need to decide if we want a new name or if we want to keep Friends of Leroy or a combination. Whatever. Discuss. We can register once we get our team name settled.

MIF added a new twist this year. They’re having a T-shirt contest. Each team is to design their own shirt. I knoooooow we’ve got a slew of creative Nutters who can drum {heh} up some great ideas for T-shirts! Knowing our name will help here too.

We’ll keep updates with registration status and when people can start contributing, etc.

I'm still playing with "Nutters For Life"

It's basic, but it covers a lot and doesn't name anyone in particular. This way, we can have a "logo" of sorts, but change the name of who we walk for at will year after year if we choose to.

I was also thinking that the shirts we make could have Laurie's name on the back like a football jersey. Or, we could always use CG5 somewhere on the front or back.

Opinions? Suggestions?

Oooooh, I like the CG5 idea. Maybe on the sleeve like the 3 on Stewart's Leroy shirt.

Excellent. Keep in mind that the more stuff we put on it, the more the shirts will cost. I'm all for having the best shirt though.

We have to put a deadline on the design. I'll ask my end when he would need a deadline to do them, but if we are getting them done online, we have to take into consideration shipping and processing time.

I think 2/28/09 would be a good deadline for the design. That leaves us a month to get them done. Thoughts?

I really like the CG5 idea. and I would pay a bit extra to have my grandfathers initials put on my shirt somewhere, he also passed away from a melanoma complication in surgery...

I'm afraid I'm of no help these next few weeks, but I would be honored to walk in Laurie's honor.
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

You wouldn't want me designing a t-shirt but I'll walk and raise some dough.

Is it a worldwide walk, or just in one city? If it's worldwide, I'd be happy to do it and raise some funds. If it's just in one city, I'd be happy to contribute.

I'm with Alex. My sister was diagnosed several years ago. Does every city have one, ala the 24 hour cancer walk?

My understanding is that it's just in the one city. I looked into it a bit and there doesn't appear to be a walk organized in Toronto.
In Dallas, the only game that really mattered was in the word gamelan.
