Finally listened to this. Very cool and educational, but you are right, the pacing was oddly quick. If I hadn't listened to as many interviews with Stewart before listening to this, I don't know if I would have been aware of his usual speaking cadence or noticed the speed of this. I really enjoyed it and will be looking forward to the additional segments.

Episode 2 is up on the BBC website now. I won't have time to listen to it until at least this evening. I'm just surprised that none of the British peeps have commented on it yet.
In Dallas, the only game that really mattered was in the word gamelan.

I just listened to episode 2 on the BBC website while Dive was posting the link here. Amazing stuff about Krupa's contribution to the swing era.
I forgot how much I love swing music and what an influence it had on me as a little kid. "Sing! Sing! Sing!" is still one of my all time favourite songs. When I was really small the only records we had were my parents big band albums and a couple of Christmas albums. Weird as it sounds, my brother and I used to play radio station with these records and a truly crappy little record player. He was always the DJ and I was the technician. After he'd announce a song and I cued it up and started playing it, we'd dance around the basement like fools. Such infectious rhythms! And thanks Iain, Dive, Stewart and the BBC for helping me get to know the guy behind the drum kit that had such an impact on me.

I'm listening to it (and recording it) right now, and this is my reaction too. Love swing, love Benny Goodman, and this is helping me to understand why.

Favorite quote about Krupa: "he always made Benny fly," from one of the interviewees.

Also some very historically interesting analysis of the cultural and creative consequences of the color-blindness of some band leaders and the slow racial integration of big bands.

This show is just a joy, a sheer joy.

Late again....and also in response to Dive. My Dad was pretty sure that the amphetamines Mr. Krupa was said to be fond of had a bit hyped him to play on :wink:. Not completely, but it was part. Still, a great drummer. That/the speed most likely contributed to GK's earli-ish demise.......

Ha! You know, last night I was out to dinner with some folks I know from a local ADHD group, and one of the guys is a drummer. He claims that "a lot" of drummers are ADHD...guess it sorta comes with the territory.

Maybe Krupa was just self-medicating...;)

(to the uninitiated: a common treatment for ADHD is amphetamine in various formats, which works kind of the reverse in ADHDers than it does in "normals".)

True dat. My brother was a drummer and I always wondered how could he divide his brain in 5 parts to play the instrument. It helps with coordination, believe it or not. 8)
