gordo to retire but first new police album and retro stuff

Postby smax on 07 Jan 2009 21:08

this has been lifted wholesale from LiSting who credits it to keith @ Stingus.

"Here is a message posted by Keith on Stingus :

1- There are rumours that The Police have been approached for a new album & tour in 2009. The names thrown around are Best Buy, Live Nation and apparently Microsoft Zune. Apparently, big money is promised.

2- While Sting has been reported to be hooking up with Dominic in March/April 2009, some are suggesting it is for new material (a few songs) to be included on a Sting (Solo) Greatest Hits album that might be simultaneously released along side a Police new album/tour in 2009.

3- The industry believes Sting's non stop activity (SFTL CD, tour, The Police Reunion/tour, Welcome To The Voice/Opera stint, Return to SFTL tour, new album/tour in 2009 is the prep for his commercial "retirement" in the next few years (...he will be 60.) As such, Sting seeks to mine his vast archive of live stuff and, as such, may have an SFTL Tour live DVD from the recent Asian Shows released (hence the inclusion of new tracks like the Beatles My Life etc.)

4- Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland are reported to have zero/no new albums/tours for 2009. And, both are apparently under a confidentiality agreement. There are rumours of long awaited box set #2, which will include some "old" concerts. Notice, we have not heard much from either - in a big way. Andy is rumoured to be working a career retrospective box set with alot of live stuff.

Is this stuff true or just garbage....I cannot tell you...just sharing what is floating out in Sting/Police land. The only way to really find out is to ask if any of The Police's tour road crew is contractually obligated/been contacted for next year (2009.)

Any comment ?"

shoinks.... nuff to get yer teeth into there? personally i'm not sure i buy the 'gordo retiring' bit; that seems unlikely from, as stew calls him, the consummate pop star and performer...

"apparently big money is promised"... no, you don't say?! ooh, it must be true then...

and stew may have "zero/no new albums/tours for 2009" but we know he's got some writing to do: score sheets and blank pages... although a "confidentiality agreement" would explain why the maestro has been quiet here of late...

altho the "police related stuff to talk about" rumour may be given legs by this footage from november: who's that in the doorway who leaves without being bothered by the paps...

"confidentiality agreement"

Y'all watch the Spectacle tonight: pay particular attention to Mac Stingo's face when Stewart mentions the "Treaty of Versailles".

Jus' sayin'. Thinks this is a DUH point!

As for the "retirement" rumors...YEAH EFFIN'RIGHT! He'll be 60 but Andy's 66 and not in great shape as him. That will be an occasion to say another "LASTEST GOODBYE" $$$$$$$$$. What I *DO* believe, though, is that the creativity well has been quite dry for a while now.

OTOH, where's his motivation?

Always interesting to speculate.

"confidentiality agreement"... could also (which I already assumed) be the cause for the recent silence on Stewart's part - whether for the book or other reasons.

I would love to hear Sting's version of "My Life". It's probably my favorite Beatles song. I can't really say that though... there are many.

Who knows. Some of it may be true ('09 tour talk?) but you gotta figure it's all subject to negotiation and may or may not happen.

I dunno. I'd still go see more Police shows, but damn it'd be nice to have a.) a different setlist b.) Andy and Stewart allowed to talk onstage c.) some Andy & Stewart songs in the setlist d.) UltraStar banished to a dungeon somewhere.

Just sayin'.

Stewart could be silent for a few different reasons, IMO...my guess is eventually we'll hear dish on Tourzilla, but it may be years. Heck, I think I'd rather hear him talk about whatever new project he's working on anyway, and we don't have one yet.

It'll be worth the wait.

I think that must be referring to his recording of "A Day in The Life"
But what do I know.

I also think the notion of retirement is bunk.

Oh, that's right...I did not remember him covering "In my life", that's why I asked Bets.

(OT, but does anyone have a copy of Stingo performing 'Ave Maria'? I'm nuts about that song and I sort of 'collect' versions of it...

Hmmmm....I should really dig for an E Costello version, too, shouldn't I...?)

ETA: For fucks' sake. I should really check ITunes before I post these things. I'm listening to it right now. Lovely. Sting & Placido Domingo, from a Dominic Miller album a few years ago.

That's - um - odd.

Given that I'm a nobody, I have no opinion to venture on most of that. But the retiring thing - I don't buy that. At. All.

Retire and do what? Retire FROM what? Making music? Retire from the urge to work out how to master a new instrument? Retire from words popping into your head and mulling them around into a lyric? Retire from a beautiful melody and harmony nagging you for attention? Retire from accepting offers to perform in a different role/media? Does anyone seriously think this incredibly talented musician and performer is going to stop and just make cheese or whatever? Fuck - even Blur's bass player has decided that cheese isn't enough of a creative life.

Retiring from big tours I can completely understand. I just don't think that a person with Mr Sting's history stops doing the creative stuff, and wanting it to have an audience.

Strange, strange info you found there smax.

Sting isn't going to retire as long as Trudy is spending his money.

Youch. Holy crap I know you're kidding conroy, but you've induced a strange sisterhoody feminist Trudy defensive reflex I didn't know I had before now. That was a bit harsh mate ;-)

Pfft. I may be bigger, older, and uglier than you smax, but I don't swipe. Not since I moved south and don't have access to fresh whole fish to swipe people with properly.

Lest my last was misinterpreted, conroy - I wasn't swiping. Much. Maybe consider it as a tinned sardine being waved in your general direction rather than a whack round the chops with a whole haddock. :-)
