Mudder Queen, the tape you were talking about is probably Claude Bolling's suite for Violin and Jazz Flute!! Fantastic album, your daughter has taste!

And Maude, for some intelligent pompous music that is sure to get your kid thinkin', go for The Soul Cages album by Sting!!!!!

EDIT: I think I could be wrong about Claude Bolling...sounds like it could be not sure.

YEAH, THAT WAS IT! It was Claude Bolling and I think the other guys name was Jean Jacque SimethingthatbeginswithanR. The violinist toured a lot and I saw him in concert at UCSB - I just can't rememger his darn name - Rampaul? Wow, you rock. My family got a big charge out of it, seeing as she was playing it in a PlaySchool tape player. Devin's the Rasta Mama of the family now.

I used to walk 7 miles a day during each pregnancy and listen to music all the way; always wondered if that had something to do with their taste; with Devin it was a lot of Grover Washington, Joe Sample, Bobbi Humphrey and a little John Coltraine; Kiernan was Joshua Tree and Dream of the Blue Turtles, Kiernan was Depeche Mode 101 (it was a phase, lol). I didn't walk much with Timmy and he's the only one that listens to popular music. Hmmmm....

Maud, I love the playlist. Thanks for sharing it with us. You've got one lucky son to have a Mom like you.

Sorry I'm late to the party, but maybe some Brazilian or African music? A lot of Western music is derived from themes sometimes found in traditional music (a good example is the old hit 'Lion Sleeps Tonight' by The Tokens; it's a version of a traditional African song called 'Mbube', the most famous version of which was recorded by Mariam Makeba.)

Just a few more thoughts...

'Gone Fishin',' Taj Mahal

'One Piece at a Time,' Johnny Cash (Another kids' classic: "Boy Named Sue")

'Umabarauma,' Jorge Ben (great song about soccer)

'You Are My Sunshine'...Everybody on earth has covered this, from Aretha Franklin to Bing Crosby

'Hoodoo Voodoo,' Wilco and Billy Bragg

(depending on the kid) 'Magneto and Titanium Man,' Paul McCartney & Wings

"Goober Peas," another traditional song that's been covered by everyone...

"Erie Canal" - There's a great version by Bruce Springsteen

"Battle of New Orleans," Johnny Horton

"Big John," Jimmy Dean

"Saginaw Michigan," Lefty Frizzell

"Last Date," Pearl Jam

"Froggy Went a Courtin," Elvis Presley, Doc Watson or Bob Dylan

"This Land is Your Land," Woody Guthrie

"Strawberry Jam," Michelle Shocked

(Maybe I'm a weirdo, but when I was a kid I loved the song "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot....and "Beer Beer Beer" by the Clancy Brothers....)

This is just off the top of my head...I'll keep thinkin'.

Dive, I love your list. I thought about world-music. I've added yeke yeke the last minute. It's so hard to make a list. It just never ends. You can go on and on and on and on. Maybe I will make another one when I know what he likes and dislikes (and add some different things too).

Please use it! But I'm sure you can make it better by adding some songs.

My son's birthday is wednesday. I can't wait to hear which songs he likes.

Thought of a couple more:

Either 'Riki Tiki Tavi' or 'Atlantis' by Donovan

And of course! 'Apeman' by the Kinks!!

Do let us know what he thinks, Maud....

:) Well, at first he was a bit disappointed that he didn't get any Lego (we have tons of Lego, we could build our own house of Lego :? )
But now he likes his mp4 very much. He is still listening and processing. He likes the numbers he already knew (yeah yeah). And he said that he liked the "rock" songs more than the rest. But he discoveres new songs every day. When things get more clear, I'll let you know.

excellent stuff maud; your dedication to the cause should be applauded....

although i bet he's gonna get into dance music; there was ony one tune on your list (faithless)!

shame on you: no chemical brothers, orbital, omni trio, groove armada, aphex twin, new order, guy called gerald, leftfield, future sound of london, daft punk, the prodigy.....

although i guess the love of dance music comes later when the crushing teenage years arrive and young people balance the uncertainty in their own lives with the inescapable security of repetitive beats...
