As much as he's not my cup of tea, he was quite the phenomena--Garth Brookes.

Who the f*ck is Garth Brookes? Or is this very stupid that I never heard of him.

And YES thank you all, that were the names I was looking for. Definitely Nirvana and Metallica, Beastie Boys, RUN DMC, Bjork.....

And now the search for all those songs begins!

OOH yes good call!

Hootie and the blowfish -Only wanna be with you.

How about some sound tracks from films and shows such as Chicago, Miss Saigon, Highlander, Grease, Saturday Night Fever etc. Or is all that a bit girlie?

It is very sophisticated that you never heard of him. He was a youngish country singer in the biggest, stupidest cowboy hat that you'll every see. However, in North America his records went flying off the shelves in the early 90's and he greatly aided a huge resurgence of interest in country music in the U.S.
I'm by no means an expert on him because I was living in the Caribbean when he broke on the scene. I believe I too said, "Who the f*ck is Garth Brookes?" upon my return to Canada.

The Foos novice in the room suggests Color and the Shape as an album which covers Bellas great suggestions, and Mike is bang on re. everlong acoustic. So maybe double up and get Skin and Bones too ;-)

Yikes - this is turning into some shopping list Maud :-) Can we make mix-tapes for your fine offspring?!

To which I would like to add The Lemonheads...

My son, 17, who is an aspiring musician now and had an inordinately eclectic taste in music from about 6 years of age, showed a preference (on his own; have no idea where it came from) for Frank Sinatra and Frank Rossolino. Later came the to-be-expected Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin (which I never listened to - I was a musical moron as a teen). I think there's a little jazz gene in all kids. My older daughter brought a cassette tape to the dinner table one night, when she was 4, of - I can't even remember the name; it was a jazz musician playing with a classical musician and had a cute cover of a clarinet dancing with a violin or something.

Also, sounds corny, but I played tons of classical music around the house from the time my kids were infants until now (whenever I can get away with it). None of them seem to have a great love for it, but I do think it just helps tickle those musical neurons in all directions.
We are, each of us, Angels - with only one wing. We must embrace each other to fly.
