My blog of the (almost) Whiskey A-Go-Go review

When I first booked the trip to LA to attempt to see the Police, I knew it was going to be a long shot. This was like once upon a daydream. Out of all the stories of Police, my favorite is the show that took place at Last Chance in Poughkipsie, NY. I knew this would probably be my Last Chance (pun intended) to ever get to see the Police in a venue such as this. And after advising Nicole and Jean that I wasn't the third or fourth winner, I admit I was a bit disappointed. This would be the first time I wouldn't get to attend a cool Police related event such as this with her (which I think would have been the fifth time we'd have gotten to do something so cool). I was disappointed for all of two seconds and then I emailed Jean and Nicole back and decided what the hell, what did they think about me coming out there even though I hadn't won a pass to see the Rehearsals. They both talked me into it as well as several of my co-workers whom I advised I might be taking a few days off on short notice (thank god I have one of the greatest supervisors in the world). So, the rest of Friday afternoon was spent snagging last minute deals off the internet I lucked out pretty good as I usually do in these situations.

However, perhaps as a harbinger of things to come, one of my co-workers came down with sinus infection that left him feeling nauseaous and wanting to just lie down and school. On Saturday, the same ailment descended upon. Despite this potential hindrance in my plans, i decided to go ahead. My flight was out of BWI (about 80 miles from my house) and I knew when I would be coming back I'd likely be facing a major winter storm, so I decided to to take an Amtrak train from Quantico, Va (about 15 miles from my house) straight to BWI and spend a night at a hotel near the airport. I got a last minute deal via Hotwire and I learned that you can use Paypal to pay for Hotwire bookings which I thought was brilliant. Anyway, the train idea it worked out to be a great plan. The train actually had lay over at Union Station in Washington DC for an hour and a half and I was actually able to get decent sleep which I desperately needed. The rest of the ride was pleasant and I took some Benadryl before hitting the sack. If only I had gotten sick on any other day.

I woke up on Sunday morning feeling worse than I did on Saturday evening, thinking I was going to be the first to fall over in the air less than perfect. I could barely stand up and thought for sure i was going to go into convulsions and pass out. I only got about 4 hours of sleep after having suffered from insomina the entire week before. I was still determined to make the damned trip. I could barely keep my eyes open on the shuttle ride to the airport and was able to change my seats to window seats on both legs of the trip so I could get some sleep on the way out.

Fortunately, I didn't have any medical distress on the airplane and almost miraculously, the malady had departed as fast as it had struck me and i felt 110% better. Fortunately, I had enough time between my flight and Jean's arrival that I was able to check into my hotel and relax a bit and then take a quick walk to the convenience store because I burned for a Diet Coke and a cheap pair of sunglasses to replace the ones I'd lost somewhere in the airport in Charlotte through which I caught my connecting flight to LAX. Some protesters were protesting something out in front of the hotel and there was some conference going on in the hotel but I was too tired to even care what the issue may have been. Sometimes living the life like a man in a suitcase can be exhausting..

I made contact with Nicole who had met with Maggie and checked into their room in Beverly Hills a few blocks away from the Backstage Cafe. The plan was for us www.stewartcopeland.net people to meet up with sting.com people for dinner and watch the Police grammy performance at the Backstage Cafe.

Jean called me after she checked into her hotel located just a few blocks away from mine. This was the first time I'd spoken to Jean, and within ten seconds of the conversation commencing it was like we'd been lifelong friends. It had been like the first time I met Kim and Nicole as well. This confirmed my first suspicions that this trip was going to be rocking awesome. Jean and I talked practically non-stop during the entire trip to the Backstage Cafe. I tend to be a bit quiet and shy around people I hardly know when I first meet them, so this was a rarity and I knew there was something magical about Jean.

At the Backstage Cafe, we met up with Nicole, Maggie, and some sting.com folks who were all a blast to hang out with. They are just as cool as the stewartcopeland.net folks. I couldn't think of anywhere else I'd in the world I'd rather have been that evening. Barrett and Chandra were there as well and all felt right in the world when I got my scrumptious Buffalo Backstage Burger and dipped my fries into the heavenly Backstage Cafe sauce and I knew Ian's spirit was in the air. Everyone seemed to think I'd have a good shot at getting into the show the next day despite not having won a ticket beforehand.

Anyway, when we got to the car, Jean couldn't find the ticket to exit the parking garage near the Backstage We were so excited neither of us paid attention to what happened after she got it from the booth attendant when we entered. And I was pretty lit when we left, so I forgot exactly how she got out of paying the full amount instead of the two dollar rate we were supposed to pay, but I think she had to fill out a piece of paper and give them her license.

Jean and I met up early the next day and Jean decided to avoid the 405 and instead used La Cienega as our main conduit to get to Sunset Boulevard , with which I totally agreed after the bad experiences Nicole and I had with the 405 when we'd come to LA last year for the LA premiere of Everyone Stares. It turned out to be a great idea and we made good time. All the sting.com folks, Maggie and Nicole had already arrived and started an unofficial line across the street from the Whisky A- Go-go where they'd used sharpies to assign number positions in line. I was 8 and Jean was 9. Several other sting.com folks showed up, but as I watched the pretty tight security work across the street, I began to come to the realization that my chances of getting in were starting to drop precipitiously and i thought I was going to be driven to tears. But at the same time, I was having so much fun it did not feel the like the world was running down, but Nicole, Jean and all the other folk made the best of what was still around with the slim hopes that i was going to get into the club. About 9:00 a clock we started to make our approach by crossing the street to the club, walking in the long gone footsteps of others who must have made similar approaches at this historical venue.

However, the synchronized minions working the security at the Whiskey shooed us across to the other side of the street one block down and said they'd give us the signal to come back over. A little while later they let us go back across. Then the stars began to arrive. I believe Stewart was first, Andy second and, of course, Sting was last.

Then when we finally lined up, the news reporters came out and our valiant winners from both sting.com and stewartcopeland.net gave excellent interviews to the media. I was exceptionally proud of our Nicole and Jean. I did not bother talking to the press because I knew I would most likely not have the pleasure of feasting my eyes on this historic event. And my fears turned out to be true. As I was walking up the hill to the back of the line where people handling the distribution of wrist straps told us to go, Omaha Perez, who bares a striking resemblance to a younger and taller Andy Summers recognized me and introduced himself. He would join us for lunch at the Backstage Cafe later that afternoon. We never figured out if the fourth winner showed up or just remained anonymous. If that person did that latter, he or she really missed a great time hanging out with the rest of the sting.com and stewartcopeland.net users. Maybe whoever it was had embarked on some sort of secret journey.

Anyway, up the hill behind the club, there were probably about a dozen of us hoping to get in, but the slicky boy doing the name check verification of the winners essentially nixed it. There was one dude with whom I struck up a conversation who was waiting for his girlfriend who was late who would have let me go in as his guest, but of course she showed up at the very last minute. I was running out of flexible strategies.

Then we were shooed across the street and watched the ballet-like dance between the security guards out front and some of the people who couldn't get in who kept walking by trying to get a listen of the music while be chased by security. One security guard seemed pretty cool. He was working where the winners were waiting to get in. I should have asked him whether he thought it was a dead end job because he seemed to enjoy himself so much (probably the banter with all the pretty ladies in line). One of the other guys standing around was quickly nicknamed the Incredible Hulk, because he looked like Lou Ferrigno. I certainly hope the guards weren't thinking of messing with this demolition man.

Afterwards, I noticed a couple of women who were in line without tickets got in (they seemed pretty cool, so I'm not angry that they got in). i guess next time, I need to pack a dress with a plunging neckline , a nice pair of pumps and a good wig and maybe that will do the routines like Bugs bunny used to do in the classic warner brothers cartoons.

After about an hour, people started to exit and I got a chance to talk to Chandra and her husband Barrett for a few minutes. Then, my message in bottle arrived in the form of Nicole who approached like she was walking on the moon with a souvenir copy of the press release. We watched the circus-like atomosphere of the press trying to get pictures fighting for room with the fans trying to get autographs of the band. Stewart, taking the biscuit, stood several minutes and signed autographs, though I wasn't close enough to get him to sign my Message In a Box set and I always feel icky when I see other people thrust stuff in his face for him to sign. But something cool did happen, he recognized Divemistress of the Dark which is a great moment.

After the three ring circus left town, we met up with Omaha Perez (a very cool name, BTW) at the Backstage Cafe for lunch. I was doing most of the navigating for Jean as I've been to LA a few times within the last year but I guess my knowledge is far from perfect as ii did kinda get us lost a little bit, though we did pass the La Brea tar pits which location Jean needed to know as she was planning to tour the day I was leaving We had a wonderful lunch with Omaha and got to talk a bit with Chandra and we got to tell her in person how much Ian meant to us and I told how blessed I was to spend 3 days with Ian, Barbara and the Dares entourage in Arizona April 2005 as it was one of the most incredible experiences in my life. God bless Chandra and Barrett because they are doing an amazing job keeping Ian's spirit alive at the Backstage Cafe.

After we left the Backstage, we headed to a cyber cafe on Melrose Ave to get refreshments and check emails, blogs and various web sites. I got to see Nicole's electrifying headdbanging performance during Message in a Bottle that I hope everyone else got to see as well. And Jean was excited to get an email from someone she hadn't seen since high school who recognized her when they aired it on the webcast.

It didn't take long to realized our brains were fried with too much information, so we drove to Santa Monica Beach via Santa Monica Boulevard right after dark and got coffee at the boardwalk and had a lovely conversation with the ocean waves providing the background ambiance.

Then Jean and I dropped Nicole off at the airport with a few departing hugs. Jean and I next hit a nearby cyber cafe and caught up on the posts. Jean uncovered some personal porn that looks like was left behind on the computer she was using from a previous customer that was just hilarious. I couldn't help but think someone was updating their myspace webpage and forget to erase the evidence they left behind.

Soon after, it was time to go back to my hotel room (a sleazy Hilton. Stewart was right, they suck) so Jean dropped me off and more hugs ensued. We all really had a wonderful time and it turned out to be even greater than we had originally imagined, even poor ol' me. Nicole and Jean were right that I should have come along, even though I was ticketless.

After i got back to my hotel room , I caught the last 45 minutes of "24" before I went to bed and one of the villains this season has the last name Gradenko.

With one breath, with one note, you will know Synchronicty.

Conroy,

thanks for posting, it still must have been unreal seeing all this, even though you didn't get to see the rehearsal itself.

Nicely interspersed with song titles.

It's great getting everyones perpesective on that day.
A mind full of useless information.

Thanks for the comments, animal. I really enjoyed myself even though I couldn't taste the glory itself, but I enjoyed getting everyone's first response to the show and living vicariously through them. It was so much fun and i can't believe how fast the time flew. I got the idea for the song titles on my hellacious plane ride back today. US Scareways has surpassed United airlines as the official airline I hate the most.

That is some serious dedication, Conroy, to make that trek on such slim hopes. You must have felt like the king of pain when slicky denied you entrance. Nonetheless, the report on your trip is... just too kool!

Sorry, couldn't resist!

Conroy, you're breaking my heart. Whoever that fourth person is, if they were a no show, they should be shot on sight! Especially since you went all the way there with no ticket.

Great report.

You must be exhausted - get some sleep!

hey Conroy... I think I met you yesterday outside the Whisky (light blue long sleeve sweater, shaved head)... I myself pulled off what must have been a pretty convincing flu over the phone in order to call in sick @ work just for the opportunity drive 15 minutes to go to this thing and essentially stand outside and hear the thing from outside and catch glimpses of Sting/Andy/Stewart out of and into their respective limos... I will say I was fancying myself quite the fan until I read this and found out you basically flew in to L.A. to do the exact same thing ... RIGHT ON!!!

Hey Laz! Sorry none of us has given you a shoutout yet. I think we're all still a little dazed from all the excitement.

I sure did miss my traveling companions today (I'm still in L.A.) but thanks to them I will have all sorts of wonderful memories of my rock and roll adventure. Thanks again Conroy, for all the help, and most especially Nicole and Maggie, without whom I doubt sincerely I'd have wound up close enough to Andy to see what brand of shoelaces he buys (looked like St. Louis Braid, to me. ;))
On Google - site:stewartcopeland.net "your keyword here" - thanks DM!!

Hey Laz!

It was great to meet another forum member in the flesh.

You know, I said it at the time but I really did mean it - we all had such an awesome time together that I feel like it was something we need to make a point to do again in the future. Sort of a fan "mini-convention" over a weekend to just chill out and get to know each other, and hopefully have some kind of event at the center of it all as well. Whether or not it's a Police concert or a solo gig by one of the guys, etc.

Hey Laz,

Sorry I forgot to give you a shout out. It was a long day yesterday getting home (I worked on the blog on the plane and train rides home) but it was great meeting you as well. Like sockii said, we all had so much fun that we have to do something like this again. I'm thinking something like Ian's birthday which is coming up in April, which is at a time of year where it is still reasonably cheap to travel before the high season and it's enough time that people can plan now. We could all meet in LA at the Backstage Cafe (the coolest place in LA). Or something else. It doesn't matter, but I think it'd be cool if we could meet up a few times ayear like we did this past weekend.

I can't wait to see your pictures, sockii. I only took a few because I was having so much fun.
