Other Concerts

This past weekend, Conroy and I got to two darn good shows here in Philly.

First up was the Australian Pink Floyd Show at the Tower Theater, doing The Wall in its entirety (and the live concert version, just not copying the album).

It was pretty damned awesome. Totally recommend checking these guys out if you like Floyd and get the chance. The guy who "does" Roger is especially uncanny vocally. Their Gilmour is pretty good too even if he lacks that certain "ethereal" something that Dave's singing has always had.

Saturday night was the Bad Faerie Ball at the Trocadero. We both claimed our righs are Bad Faeries by stating that we were doing a bad job of dressing up as faeries. Three acts took to the stage that night; first up was Priscilla Hernandez, an "ethereal-gothic" singer/songwriter from Spain. Some of her stuff was pretty good, but some was a bit too heavy on the emo-goth side for my tastes. "I Steal The Leaves", which you can hear on her website, was one of my favorites from her set.

Second up was Trillian Green, who are FUCKING AMAZING. I think Conroy will agree that all nutters should check these guys out. A trio of flute, cello, and percussion, they sound unlike anything I can quite put my finger on except perhaps celtic-instrumental Jethro Tull. I'd actually like to hear Stewart compose something for them to play. Check out "Pan Parag" on their MySpace, I think you'll dig it:

Last up were Qntal, from Germany. More goth/electronica/dance, some of which was a little too atmospheric for nearly midnight after a long day at a convention - bad faeries were slipping off to sleep all around us on the balcony. But they did pick up the tempo for the end of the set. Their singer has a gorgeous voice and it was cool seeing them incorporate "string" instruments from the lute to a theremin into their music.

Man, I wish I wasn't broke from last week. Eddie Vedder and Liam Finn (Neil Finn's son. I love, love love Neil Finn if you didn't already know) will be playing this Saturday and Sunday at Warner Theatre in Washington D.C.

Con, Amy, you should go for me!
Liam Finn's band is coming back to DC next month (Sept. 6 which is a Saturday) at the Rock and Roll Hotel:

http://www.rockandrollhoteldc.com/portal/calendar/

I've never been to this venue but NE DC is a dodgy and somewhat dangerous neighborhood.
Until recently I was living in the Baltimore / DC area, and I've seen several shows at the R&R Hotel (very cool place by the way). Yeah the neighborhood can be a little sketchy but its not too bad. However, if the thought of walking around the area at night bothers you (or if you have a nice car you don't want to park there) simple solution: Park someplace a little less "sketchy" (like in Georgetown or down by Pentagon Row) and just take a cab there. They'll drop you right at the front door, and then you can call one to pick you up right there when the show's over. A cab ride between the R&R Hotel and Pentagon Row runs about $15-$20.

This makes me remember the days of the original 9:30 Club. You ran like you were in the Olympics between your car and the front door of the club. :D

Welcome, TKK! (Just so you know, we have some other users with variations on the 'Kalypso' meme...so bear with us if folks don't realize you're new right away...just sayin'.)

I lived in D.C. myself for nine years. One and only time I ever got held up was during a drunken stagger back to my car from the Black Cat club...I really shouldn't have been out at 3 AM with only my other drunk silly friend for protection. Not in that neighborhood, anyway.

(Friend and I were both broke. We opened our purses to show we'd spent all our money on beer...I'm not 100% convinced the guy actually had a gun, but in any event we got off scot-free in the end.)
On Google - site:stewartcopeland.net "your keyword here" - thanks DM!!

Sockii nailed it with the great entertainment we got last weekend. The Bad Faerie ball would have been perfect if it was just Trillian Green, who also played at the FaerieCon, and Qntal. I agree with Sockii 110% that someone needs to commission Stewart to compose a piece for Trillian Green. I bought two of their CDs at FaerieCon because I liked them so much and some of the pieces they performed make me think of Stewart's Spyro the Dragon pieces and that's why I think they'd be a great combo. Also, I was enthralled by the percussionist because he played the drum and hit the cymbals with his bare hands, yet he has a polyrhythmic style that must lead to some mean looking callouses on those hands.

And the FaerieCon itself was great except for the noticeably low foot traffic. Hopefully, the economy will have turned around by next year as I would definitely love to go again. The costumes were all really cool and I was thrilled to hear Wendy and Richard Pini, the creators of the Eflquest comic book series, announce that Warner Bros is developing an Elfquest movie. I should have lobbied for Stewart to compose the score while I was there.

I went to see Queen and Paul Rodgers on Monday night. It was an exceptional show. I decided to get tickets last minute when I found out my afternoon class was canceled and managed to end up in the third standing row. The musicianship was otherworldly. I'd highly recommend them to anyone who has the chance to go.

Also, tomorrow night, I'm going to see Neil Innes. I'm interested to see what he pulls out of his back catalog. 8)

I'm simply waiting for them to announce their US tour dates...and I'm so there!

So I'm certifiably insane ... I'm a huge Medeski, Martin & Wood fan (Billy Martin is an amazing drummer, and MMW is a fabulously genre-bending power trio! Drums, bass, keyboards), and about three weeks ago I was perusing their tour dates on their web site. Last show of the current tour: Nov. 22, in Sparks, Nevada.

We have good friends who live in Reno; I ask my husband "is Sparks close to Reno?" Turns out ... the Nugget casino in Sparks is about a 15-min drive from their house. And they are MMW fans too.

Buy tickets: check
Book plane flight: check

So this past weekend was a fairly spontaneous trip to Reno to see MMW! We also hiked around Lake Tahoe, which was lovely.

Show was great -- all new stuff, with a random Herbie Hancock riff thrown in. John Medeski plays about five different keyboards in any given song, including a Wurlitzer and a Hammond B3 organ. Their highly improvisational style inclines in two different directions: catchy jazz-funk, and free-form jazz. I enjoy the former, with good melodies and rhythm anchors, more than the latter. Happily, this show was mostly the former, and seriously fun to hear and watch. Very different from the last time we saw them, which was at Orchestra Hall in Chicago in 2001. Different vibe, different crowd.

The venue was also a hoot -- the "Celebrity Showroom" in the Nugget casino in Sparks, replete with pink lamé velvet. We had the second table back from the stage, pretty much right in the middle. It was a fairly small, but incredibly enthusiastic, crowd.

If you aren't familiar with them, I'd recommend checking them out. Best album to start with is "Combustication"; my favorite song on it is "Coconut Boogaloo".

ETA: One of the most touching things was that they did one song for an encore, a Hendrix song, and Billy introduced it as a tribute to Mitch Mitchell. Loved it.

Saw Daniel Lanois at Massey Hall last week in Toronto.

You may know him as the Producer for U2 and BobDylan, Nevelle Bros, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris.

but he is also a wicked song writer/vocalist and guitarist.

Gobsmackingly good show...Wow !

Cheers. (Brian Blade on drums)

saw Primal Scream at hemmersmith odeon last week.

they were very very good; an hour and a half of dancey hits; jailbird, rocks, country girl et al (including the ambitious 'higher than the sun' from their legendary {?} screamadelica album) drummer darren moody (who i've played with in another band) was like a machine.... bobby gillespie doing his usual singing like a sick 8 year old girl and dancing like a freak, mani (ex stone roses) being baggy and groovy all night, andrew innes being an animal and pulling out some serious shit from his guitar; prompting a mid-song handshake from mani...

and they brought on kevin shields (from 'my bloody valentine'). he was responsible for my ears starting to ring at a gig in about 1994... and he was equally noisy at this gig.. by the end the audience were stunned and just staring blankly at the empty stage, frozen by the lazers, the keyboards, samplers and the ridiculous amount of feedback coming from four guitars all leant against their amps.

excellent.

and 'fat freddy's drop' at the roundhouse tonight........

Monday night I travelled to Columbia, SC to see Family Force 5, a crunk rock band, along with Shiny Toy Guns (from LA, CA, they were cool!) and The Delta Fiasco (electronica type club stuff, they're from UK).

Family Force 5 is incredibly entertaining, no one does a live show like they do. The singer wears the giant Hulk gloves for some of the set, the guitar minion dances around onstage like a maniac, the bass player break dances as well as flipping his bass around his body and plays from every angle except the proper one. The drummer does handstands on the drums. There's even a key tar player. They're from Atlanta, GA

Major party band, lots o fun!

I've seen a few good ones recently. I went to a Glenn Tilbrook show, and I saw the Alarm. In the next few weeks, I get to see Madness, The Damned, and Ade Edmondson's folk-punk cover band, so those should be fun. 8)

Neil Young and Wilco rocked hard...Neil sounded just unbelievable and set ended with him laying to waste a version of the Beatles "A Day in the Life" definitely one of those things I'll never forget...

Looks like we might be in NYC for New Year's...the Damned are playing on NYE proper and I just got word that Yo La Tengo is playing in Maxwell's in Joisey for seven nights at the end of the month (21-28)...am absolutely DYING, Ive been listening to them non-stop for a streak here and then to just see this <explodes>
