One of the joyous aspects of living in Chicago is the mind-boggling proliferation of summer street festivals. There's a new one this year that's just three blocks from our house; this one's very kid-oriented, with face painting and pony rides. But there are two stages and bands scheduled on both for both days.
Even better, one of the late afternoon bands on Sunday was Jukebox the Ghost, from DC:

A bouncy, fun three-piece band. Reminiscent for various reasons of Ben Folds Five, They Might Be Giants, Electric Light Orchestra, Yes. Their song "Hold It In" is a total earworm, and "Good Day" uses a very cool Penguin Café riff that I love.
I had a nice little chat before the show with the guitarist, Tommy, and he was really cool. During the set we were standing right in front of the drummer, and he was crazy, having a blast banging on stuff and throwing stuff. Not doing anything super-fancy, but doing what he did well. I did laugh when he banged his smaller ride with the tambourine in his right hand, then threw the tambourine to get a new stick out of his bag.
I recommend catching them if they are nearby (they are in NYC on the 20th, Philly on the 28th).

Monday night we went to Ravinia (a lovely outdoor concert venue in the north Chicago suburbs) to hear the Beaux Arts Trio (Daniel Hope's three-piece band 
) on their farewell tour. It was a gorgeous evening, sunny and dry. We had a picnic dinner on the lawn and a nice bottle of wine, and then went into the Martin Theater for the performance.
Daniel fan-girl that I am, we had third row center seats. Aurally, we were sitting close enough that we were hearing the sound from the instruments directly, not through the speakers. They were about as close as Daniel and Stewart were when we were in Savannah.
They started with Dvorak's Dumky Trio, which is a very unconventional six-movement (with each movement in a different key) piece full of Dvorak's usual invocations of folk music. It was great to watch them play, and they sounded fantastic; I own the Beaux Arts Trio recording of this piece, and it was really fun to see and hear live. The way the three of them communicate and play off of each other was just fascinating.
They then played a short, very modern minimalist piece composed for the Trio by Gyorgy Kurtag, and then Ravel's Trio. I have never been too much of a fan of the Ravel Trio, but they really brought it to life for me! Having the strings right.in.my.face really changed my experience of the piece; the recording I have of it has the piano miked higher than the strings, so the energy and texture of the strings doesn't really come through on the recording.
Then they played two Beethoven movements as encores (I kept asking my husband when they were going to play Message In A Bottle
): the final movement of Piano Trio Opus 1, and an adagio that I can't remember. I loves me my Beethoven, and they were clearly having a great time, so it was wonderful.
I am looking forward to the next time I see Daniel perform (if we're all lucky, it'll be in Savannah in March!).

I'm going to see Madonna tuesday (again). 
Yep, I know, There goes my reputation.
But I love her. Not so her music. The music is nice, but no more than that. I love the whole phenomenon "Madonna". I love her strength, her obstinacy and her criticism. And her shows are quite spectacular.
Other Madonna tours, I was very excited to go, now I'm still in a Police-rush and I'm a bit afraid, I'm going to be disappointed.
Sting is nothing of a controlfreak compared with her. Her shows are defined from first minute till last.

Kicks ass! I'm thrilled you guys will be able to attend - I'm gonna see if I can catch another show on the tour at some point as well. They still sound just great and the live performance had a lot of energy.

New Pornographers are showing up here in Columbia, SC at a small club and tickets were only allotted by email lottery and guestlist and PCat and I just found out we're in! That'll be on Monday...

I've only been letting myself out of work captivity like once a month but this just is too perfect. We're going to drive over, check into the hotel, PCat is gonna do his thing and I'm gonna hang out in the room order room service and work in the hotel room like I'm some sort of French intellectual...<giggle> Then in the eve. we get to go out and see music!

I hosted a concert at the university where I work. Got to wrangle the band, Your Vegas!
