I wish The Police would tour small clubs

Postby giovanni on 05 Feb 2007 22:01

Again, something that I wish but that I don't think will never happen.

I would really love to see the band playing in a small club like the early days; the excitement is way much higher and better than a stadium; a concert in a stadium is fantastic of course, but will never reach the 'status' of a small club.

I don't even know when and if they will play on a proper tour, but if they will, I will do my best, promised, to ask them to do some small club gigs (I guess everybody is reading here, not only forumers); I know very well it will be almost impossible to handle as the name is too big to plan a tour like that, but maybe some small gigs, maybe doing more nights in the same city, I don't know, something that can give the opportunity to the hardcore fans to see the band not only in big stadiums, I mean places with capacity of 4/5.000 could be good...no, could be fantastic!!!

I'm pretty sure the band would like to do something like that...I hope...

And you know what? All the people that I know that heard the rumours about a Police tour said they would really come, if the price would be affordable...if it would be more than 100 Euros they said they wouldn't pay that price...I am not talking about fans like us, of course we would pay this price and more; I'm talking about common people that loves music in general and that consider The Police a band that is always good to see...at a reasonable price. I'm sorry to say that but we got to face the truth sometimes.

Anyway, I hope they will do shows and I hope some of them will be in 'small' clubs.

I don't know about playing small clubs, Gio. But I do hope their tour dates coincide with my visit to Italy at the end of May into early June!

I agree.
I´ve seen the Musikladen Radio Bremen DVD from 1979 again this weekend and it was really amazing...
Though the audience was dreadful the band´s performance was fantastic...
I´d really love to see them in a small club...
but I don´t think that will ever happen...

I think the small club idea is excellent. If only there were a way to limit it to true fans!

I think the Rolling Stones did something similar a few years ago: One night they would play in a large arena and then the next night they'd play at a small club.

I live in the Bay Area and I would love it if The Police were to play at a place like the Fillmore. To my knowledge, they've never played there before.

I was just thinking about something like this in relation to the possible upcoming tour. I was thinking if they came to my city, the venue would suck, so I might have to travel to another city with a better big venue.

But I think it'd be possible to do small shows... Radiohead did it last summer. I saw them two nights in a row in Montreal in a theatre (not club, but actually even better) that had a 3000 seat capacity (for "normal" tours, Radiohead play big venues, like places that hold 15000 people). So it's possible, and it's AWESOME. Definitely a good idea. Don't know if they'd have to charge a whole lot of money for it, per se, but you're also right that that would separate the FANS from the casual fans.

Well, if the rumors are correct, and the Police are going to do an 80 show world tour and get paid $300 MILLION (Yikes!), then each show will need to bring in $3.75M after expenses just to pay the band!!!! At a 15,000 seat arena, this would be $250 per seat (again, just to pay the band).

I'm guessing these are going to be big venues and/or the most expensive concert tickets in history.... And probably both!

Yes, but be positive! Since tickets will cost a lot, many people would not come to shows so we may have a better chance in getting them!
Lucky, eh ?!? :? (In italian I'd say "Che c.lo!")

I'm sure that's all the stuff that's getting worked out behind the scenes. And I'm just not sure I believe that $300 million article. All these music reporters are trying to work out angles for stories, and since there's no real information out yet, they're probably just making stuff up in some instances.

That said, Gio, you'll be our hero if you can work some magic and help make some smaller club shows take place. If anybody can do it, you can! Go Gio! :)

And about the small club gigs, of course I'm with our Giovanni, I'd like to see some show in a small venue. Even maybe an aftershow show would be nice.
Intimate places gives you a really different taste.

If I was Stewart and they were couped-up on a soundstage for weeks, I would call up a local bar or club and "ask" if they would like to host the Police for a Friday or Saturday night. I think it would be cool if they just showed up with some gear to like a 100 - 200 capacity watering hole somewhere in Vancouver just to have some fun.

Can you imagine showing up at a bar to have a beer and the band is not the local cover band you thought you were going to see, but it was the POLICE!?!

You want to pitch that idea to your man on the inside, Gio? :)

It would be fantastic of course - they could even play under a "nom de plume" like REM did a few years back - Bingo Hand Job I think.

I mean - something along the lines of Klark Kent's backing band would not be factually incorrect!

Seriously though, I would like to see it purely because it would show to the cynics that they were not doing it solely for the money - the music and their relationship with each other matters also.
