What is my reaction? What should it be? smax @ hyde park

Postby dafttart on 30 Jun 2008 17:29

I swear I heard DM singing along to DTT with the following lyrics

How can you say that your not responsible?
What does it have to do with me?
What is my reaction?
What should it be?
Confronted by this latest asshattery.

Smax your review is PERFECT!!!!!

I didn't notice any flag asshattery, but I was pretty busy deafening poor Pluto, who had the misfortune of standing in front of me  and trying to wrestle the title of silliest dancer of the day from Smudge

Hmmph. Silly? It is hardly the fault of an enthused audience member if the rhythm section has way more beats in a bar than most of us have limbs, and depending on what you're paying attention to, the number of said beats varies. Oh, and dafttart leads off with the other foot. We'd be a perfect waltz couple.

But yes, it was glorious. And when I wasn't busy injuring dafttart, deafening those in front of us (pluto had me in his other ear), and revelling in smax's inability to keep the flag under control, I was enjoying every damn note. Even the duff ones.

(As a passing thought, because I don't think everyone was able to hear it, Sting's Bayswater/being brought to London reference was actually rather touching - not least because it is the first time I've heard him go off piste this tour.)

Firstly, Smax I hope you are one of the Nutters who actually earns money from their writing – you’re bloody brilliant!

Anyway, where the hell to begin?

This whole past week has been fairly mind-blowing, due to meeting DM and Moeskido, Smax and Mrs Smax for the first time. How is it that sc.netters are all so gorgeous?! I currently feel like one of those actresses who says she falls in love with every leading man, except that I’ve fallen in love with all the leading women too!!!

I think that everything has been intensified for me this weekend because I knew it was the last time that I would see The Police play. I will be eternally grateful for the fact that I was able to get over that particular ‘hump’ with so many flippin’ amazing people around me to take my mind off it

Hyde Park was like a bloody endurance test. But thank gong it was all worth it. I was beginning to have my doubts about the whole thing when I found myself in a stinky portaloo, almost retching in time to the insipid Starsailor. Thankfully things picked up when KT Tunstall appeared, and like Hannah, I think I developed a minor girl crush. I’m wondering how I’m going to break it to Mr Daft that I have turned bi over the weekend!

The day provided many comic moments, most of which are too stupid to be mentioned. We were generally surrounded by other fabulous Police fans, including the fab Sid and Heather who were celebrating his 60th in style. Also, as Smudge mentioned, the great lady and her niece who were behind us. She’s lurked on sc.net and has promised to join up.

However, the award for most pissed, unreasonable, just plain fucking annoying people of the day would have to go to the twats who were stood to our left. Without going into detail (and I grant you, it wasn’t one of my finest hours!), I rather stupidly got involved in trying to get one of the drunken women to chill out and not to shout in the face of a completely innocent bloke who she accused of ‘sitting in her space’, despite the fact that her pissed-up friends were sat several metres away. Grrrrrrrrr. She then turned on me and went ever so slightly mad. I have NEVER EVER hit anyone (except for my younger brother, and then only until he grew strong enough to hit me back!) but boy was I tempted to knock the silly cow’s lights out. Thankfully a few calming words from Smudge, along the lines of ‘don’t be a plonker and get us all thrown out of here!’ were enough to make me take a deep breath and remember why I was there! Fuck it; we were going to have a good time whatever!

And have a good time we did :D Stewart was VERY playful with his peeps and we got many grins and laughs when the light was still good enough for him to see us easily. The best thing about the show for me was seeing Smax enjoy the sheer exhilaration of being flag-bearer. All of us who were nearby had had our turn at representing sc.net by waving Le Drapeau Vert and knew how out of this world Smax was feeling. As so many of us are lucky enough to know, when the Maestro points and smiles towards you, it’s a knee-trembling moment! I have pictures of the gorgeous Smax holding flaggy like a comfort blanket – awwwww. Although I imagine he may be taking a few days off sick as a consequence!

From my point of view, the show was good – not brilliant, but good. I feel that as the last UK show, they could have made a bit more of it and I have to admit to being disappointed that Henri didn’t join them on stage for Next To You. However, I still loved every minute and will remember it until the day I die because I had Smudge, Hannah, DM, (Moeskido had escaped to risk eating a dodgy festival sausage by this point!) Smax, Mrs Smax, Empty and Pluto to sing and jig with, and that’s what counts :D

There are so many more things to say, but I’ll stop now before you’re all bored to tears!

Stewart, thanks for the memories xxx

daftart: i must apologise for curbing my chivalric urge to jump in at that point (words fail me, fucking people).
meg said that she "had my back" and that if there was any grimness directed at my flag-waving activities she would wade in and sort them out! i was acutely aware that that group had been bullying people all day and that i was about to start waving a (filthy) flag in their faces......... but they obviously respect and fear the gong-om-nom-om, if nothing else....

(hope yer picnic was fun, and did ya get any points in yer piccies?!)

I'm totally picturing a rumble in the pit going on, Stewart standing up to see what's going on, and going "oh, shit... those are my peeps"

Rant incoming....

That stupid, drunken idiot nearly ruined the day for us, and I'm pretty sure she fouled it up for a lot of other people. My liver is as pickled as the average brit's, but I cannot understand anyone drinking such monumental quantities of (warm) beer at a gig. Dafttart handled herself with great aplomb, and restraint. But. sheesh!, where were security when we needed them?

It was something of a karmic victory. By the time The Police came on stage, the people in question were too catatonic to notice, even though they were in a great spot front and centre, which they appeared to be prepared to defend to the death earlier. Twits. Welcome to england.

End of rant.

Oh and smax - the first rule of the flag.....I'm pretty sure that rightly trumps chivalry. I suspect it would have got horribly messy if any of the guys had waded in. I hope your proximity to said twits didn't mess up the gig for you.

Two things neither smax nor dafttart mentioned.

1) Aforementioned idiot woman screamed at dafttart that she was too 'posh' to be at a gig and should get herself off to church. (I'll confess to laughing like a drain at that comment - I'm sure dafttart comes from a very respectable family, but she can swear like a trooper)
2) Flagbearer smax and mrs smax moved backwards for the police set to give the substantially shorter Sid and Heather a better view. Classy couple.

"can you keep the flag down? You're being an asshat. I'm sure you'll get another point, sweetie."

fuck! sorry, sorry, i turn and apologise to DM, she smiles beatifically, we hug. [/quote]

HAHAHA.

Smaxilicious has somehow managed to conflate about 3 different moments into the one above, misquote me, AND couple me with "beatific" -- but it's his story, so I sure as hell ain't going to argue.

*snicker*

Just got home (oy), but I couldn't go to bed without sending love to our incredible and adorable boy smax, who uttered what was probably my favorite line of the day -- during "Walking on the Moon," smax turned around and said in absolute wonderment:

"That flam was for us!"

Yes, indeed, sweetheart. Yes, it was.
