De Do Do Do '86

Postby BongoBoy on 21 Dec 2006 18:37

86' is really crap. It doesn't sound like The Police with programmed drums.

The guitar is cool but the drums....uurgg...makes me feel kinda sick.

No Copeland, No Police.

Cheers.

What, you like it?

And I thought I was the only one that thought '86 sucked.

If you read my first post on this topic, I never heard it, but for me The Police's music is perfect, and reading you, hurts me that they did a song with maybe low quality, didn't connect with The Police that I know.

Do you understand why I post

Oh, no, no...

DTS

Postby giovanni on 24 Dec 2006 22:11

I do represent the DTS label in Italy and I can easily have copies to sell as it's an exclusive label we have to distribute where I work.

They cost me around 13 Euros (I don't know how much they sell it in the shops around Europe).

Let me know if you need it. Consider that there is also a complete different sound editing of the 'drums' track on 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic'. As for the rest of the tracks, it's amazing to listen to them if you have 5,1 system.

Hi, I will say, what as a free man I can say, whereas Giovanni, as a professional, has to hold another discourse. I engage myself and tell you what I feel about this music business, so you will know who I really am, if one day you ask me to build something for you.

When I listened to the 1986 remake of dododo dadada (only 1 year ago), it was a revelation for me : that the police was a band like any other band. Yes, they are exceptional musicians. But to reach the place they get at the end, they had to do be “marketed”. And for this reason, I often feel not much in common with other fans of the band, because they like them for others reasons.
This commercial attitude on their work is still going on nowadays. Someone would ask you to buy some DTS or other super-quality recordings because there is this never realised track on it. But there is absolutely no interest in listening it in fantastic quality.

Well, the people who really know more on the subject, like Henry for instance, would say it’s to intellectual and pretentious to speak about other people. But I assume this critique and give, this personal analyse, only as a creator, fascinated by true artists:

I think Sting and Andy and Stewart wanted to reach the top be proving, some how, that working technique was relevant. In a sense, they dedicated their life to music and to be worth it, it had to be something respectful for the audience. They wanted to work very hard to reach their goal. In an interview, Sting says at the beginning he was producing and producing, without having ever counted how much money he had accumulated on his bank account. Regarding his general behaviour, I think this is true. I think it’s very possible, because I have a similar example among my near relations in another domain [toute proportion gardée].

Stewart was, perhaps, from the beginning, a little bit more surfing of the opportunity given by the new young musicians being in vogue in the late ‘70’s in England. It was him who gave the real impulse. And including the other Copelands, they had less credulous knowledge of how a band could succeed.

Then, they became big. In very short time. When one read ‘1 train later’, it’s obvious that thinks went out of control. It had turned into this big industry, and as a paradox, instead of being the leading managers, they where more the product it-self, or even, the commercial agents of the product: the product being the records to sell.

It’s good that sites like this one, are run by +/- free people. Thanks Stewart for allowing it. Of course you are totally free to do what you want now. And you could go on and on and on... on a commercial exploitation of the nostalgia of the Police. But, you know it’s in a way what killed it. So you are careful and concentrate on other new thinks.
I have the biggest respect for this attitude and wish some French products/singers would also disappear at the right time, instead of being always served as re-heated : Johnny Halliday, Lara Fabian, Helène Segara, Dick Rivers, etc… call them what you want, but artists.

?
although that was in English I hardly understood what you wanted to tell...

anyway. the DTS record IS worth having. Even for the bad 1986 recording of De Do Do. It's great to listen to the different speakers and to hear the multilayered voices not as a whole, but separated. Or the guitar only... etc...

my absolute dream would be a dvd where you could do your own mix of some songs. like 4 different guitar parts, drums, bass, and about sixteen voices to mix!

:)

Dietmar, under the angle you see it, it is in did worth, I recognize, to listen to the dts version… an of course to buy a 20.000 Euros Stereo system, etc… because one cane appreciate, as you say, and as I tried to explain another way, how sophisticated, innovative, full of huge sounds, they where. I admit & respect.

I think I understand what Philip is saying.

I think I have a far less sofisticated way of looking at music. To me, it's just the song. Nothing else really matters. Louis Armstrong said "if it's good music, you don't worry about what it is".

If you start considering marketing then that will alter some decision making and lead down a different path. I think that's why The Police had a more spontanious sound on the earlier stuff...it was just musical energy, captured.

Usually re-recording songs is always a mistake...it's like a snapshot of time. You can't go back.

Having said that, the creators of music or art, movies whatever have the say in what happens. Nothing is really wrong with giving fans something they want.

What we want is the three boys in a studio laying down some new tracks!

That's my ambiguous rant.

Sorry for the spelling errors, I'm in a hurry.

Thanks Sockii!!! Is the first time I ever hear this version in better quality than another one I heard in the past...

In spite of the fact others arguments... I liked it... now I heard the voices and guitar better...yeah it needs Stewart drums so much, but focusing on the other tracks (voices & guitars) I liked it... It content more purity from the original than Dont Stand 86... Andy's guitar don't differ so much but sounds great.... and Sting voice sounds superb with those time recording tools... I also liked the last part : the Sting hiss or whisper... It will fix great at the start of the song too!

Thanx so much Sockii, you just give me my Christmas gift!

Regards from PERU,

JOSE

PS: Perhaps, nowadays Stewart will complete the recording adding his drums....and the boys would complete the album too with all the other hits newest versions for their 30th anniversary!

1) This recording is also available on the SACD release of the Greatest Hits.
2) Has there ever been any comment on this from Stewart or Sting? I asked Andy about the song during his book tour, and he said that he knew nothing about it. Has there ever been confirmation that this recording is from the '86 sessions?

Sokii : Thanks in name of the others, becaus I have erased my copy

Bongo : May I ask you a question:
Don't you think we are mainly conditioned (by the media) to like what they want that one likes (what we hear everywhere and which promotion is important)? or are we completely “free” to like what we want? I don’t mean you in particular, but the people in general.

I think the only good reason they would not reunite is because of this commercial aspect. If they come again as the police, some people would ask them to fill stadiums, to do world-tours, etc.

I don’t see any reason why Sting Andy and Stewart would want to fill stadiums again? Or better said: I don’t see any reason why they would like to have a mass audience, from the beginning… just because they used to be that legendary band called the police !!! To be successful just because of their faces? Just because they played hits 25 years ago…
No, if they reunite, it will be with a new challenge, with a “brand new” (remember Sting like this expression) project (remember they still have ideas and know a vast panel of styles of music).

Man, it was 25 years ago! Stop being delirious! It’s fun to hear at the Beatles, a new reasserted cd came out this year, ok, but, for example, consider the Rolling Stones : they are pure mass products, musically they are today totally ridiculous, in 2007!

For me, Sting, Andy and Stewart together are more than the Police. They are able to improve each others talents and capacities. If Sting makes a little break in his career, instead of always touring. If he takes time to listen to what he did and to consider what he brought to music and still can bring. Their is a chance that he relaxes a little bit about this antagonisms. There is no good reason why he doesn’t call Andy and Stewart. They can still impress, do great music.

I think the three of them would need to have a united vision of what type of Police they are going for. Sting is in his "lute" phase and Andy has always been into jazz, Stewart has his world music thing going on.

If they were all exited about a three piece sound again then yea, I would think they might do something. As long as the project made money I think it would be fine. I do not think that any big mass marketing campaign would have anything to do with it at this stage in their careers.

I think they would want to play those medium size venue's like theatre's n such, with a couple thousand fans but not huge stadiums. The motivation for them would have to be the exitement of doing new Police songs, if they don't have that then it won't happen in my view.

The bottom line is I don't think Sting has the same quest in music that Andy and Stewart do.

I think it would be an enjoyable challenge for them to go in the studio and take a shot at some new songs...no one has said it has to be like the previous Police sound, why couldn't they progress? I think it would be a bit different...and probably really, really cool.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers.

sockii, thanks so much for sharing dedodo with us. I think it is dodo. The stinky kind, that is. I felt like the record was on slow speed and I kept waiting for it to pick up the tempo. Definitely needs Stewart in the mix, definitely. It's very flat without him.

But it's always good to hear something different. Get a different perspective on a song. Thanks again.
