Is this thread to be re-titled Andrew Zimmern Bizarre Foods (i.e. The Guy Who Eats Cockroaches and Worms on the Travel Channel)???

Really? Isn't Brit food supposedly bland (well, aside of fried breakfast)?

UK folks-- feel free to clarify. :)

Smaxes: have you ever eated at an In-N-Out Burger? They are all over Southern Cal. Try a cheeseburger with grilled onions. The fries suck, but the burgers are great. It's a simple concept: hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries, soda, shakes. That's it. No chicken nuggets. No pita turnovers. No asian salads.

A SoCal institution. And cool T-shirts.

My first trip to England, they brought me salad dressing in a packet. It was mayonaise. Why?

I have lived in the UK in the 80s and can attest that only vegetables are bland in England (they are fans of boiling them and serving them without salt, including turnip), but traditional English cuisine is of the "strong stomach" kind (kippers, steak and kidney pie, bangers and mash, anyone? I still cannot eat eggs and bacon in the morning, not Mediterranean, had problems with bacon smell in Savannah).

Having said that, I know that to-date Brits eat burgers, fries, pizza, Jamie Olivers' stuff and go to Starbucks like almost anyone else in the Western World.

ETA: Outlandos, we have In'n'Out here in NorCal...They were object of sharp criticism when clients found out that their "vegetarian burger" was just the burger bun without the patty (!)...Still, why vegetarians would go to a burger joint baffles me.

I wish to clarify by pointing out that our national dish is now probably a biriyani. Thankfully.
