the 'tooting' comes from the totinges tribe who used to inhabit the area in anglo saxon (pre 1050 ish) times, although it may be from 'Tota' which meant 'look out' 1,500 years ago...but they might be the same thing.
the 'bec' bit means small stream, is also an old viking name (and the origin of my sons name, Beck).
called bec after bec abbey in normandy which was given the land following the norman invasion of england in 1066.
