MI Conversation Series Welcome Stewart Copeland
The MI Conversation Series welcomes legendary drummer Stewart Copeland of The Police.

Ranked by Rolling Stone as the fifth greatest drummer of all time, Stewart Copeland founded The Police with singer/bassist Sting and guitarist Henry Padovani in 1977. The winner of 6 GRAMMY Awards with The Police, Stewart is also a film composer and earned a Golden Globe nomination for his scoring of Rumble Fish in 1983. Copeland formed the band Animal Logic with jazz bassist Stanley Clarke and singer-songwriter Deborah Holland in 1989, and joined with Les Claypool (Primus) and Trey Anastasio (Phish) to form Oysterhead in 2000.

Copeland will discuss his career, background in songwriting and advice for students with Conversation Series host “Native Wayne” Jobson.

I just saw the interview. It's always interesting to listen to Stewart. However, why do these interviewers continue ask about topics that have been well documented? It took up half the interview. And why does nobody ever ask about Animal Logic?

I have to say that it drives me crazy when I hear this nonsense that fans have no interest in new Police music. I remember this came up on Sting.com during the Police tour and somebody from the site said that members of the band were advised that fans don't want new music. That's ridiculous. Millions of fans would go nuts for a new CD, especially since there hasn't been a new Police song in almost 30 years.

Personally, one of that things that I hope happens before I die- or before one of the band members kicks the bucket- is just one more CD of new music. Just ten songs.

Andy's solo singing CD, XYZ, has at least five great songs that can become Police songs. Andy wrote great music and great lyrics. (If Andy had a decent singing voice he'd be a solo superstar.) And I'm sure Sting has a book-full of songs that could be Policified into instant classics.

I 'd love to hear new songs too but as they all say the legend is still intact. The first time I saw the band in 1980 I was 13 years old and I can still feel the magical power or their music , then I saw them 3 years later and there again The Police was at its peak musically. Then I saw them twice again for the reunion tour , and it was a great moment of emotion to see the guys together again ( and I remember hoping for the reunion to happen) but I feel a kind of magic has gone ( though it was a great intensity to see them at the Grammy award and at The Whishy ) , because I grew too , but it still was a great experience and yes I'll die to hear new songs .... But I think it is a question of moment, you know when I saw Oysterhead I feel , oh what a band it seems as I lived the same emotion as when I saw for the first time The Police , because it was the moment for Stewart to play with that guys , it was a new experience , same thing with Animal Logic and the Stanley Clarke European tour because it IS the moment at the right time. And as a Stewart nutter I feel like hearing the new recordings at the Sacred Grove ( Snoop ...) because I feel Stewart is having so much fun doing this. But why not see the guys in the Sacred Grove with Stewart it will be fun as yes I said earlier I'll die to hear new songs. But Sting's last attempt to to write songs is about 9 years now. So let's see what happens next. And yes I still have a great respect for Sting and Andy... so why not even if it's not under the name of The Police. Remember how the Reunion was a surprise as we did not expect for a reunion at all so why not and let's see what the future has i store for us. Long live to the Sacred grove !!

You make great points, cillae. I agree with you. I also love all these projects that Stewart's involved with. They're all very different and very interesting.

It just struck me when once again I heard this preposterous idea that Police fans don't want new music. That's as if Stewart, Sting and Andy would say they wouldn't be interested in a new Beatles CD. (If all members were still alive.)

A new Police CD would hit number one on iTunes the first day of release.

But I understand that a Police CD will probably never happen because 1) Stewart and Sting just can't have a meeting of the minds in the studio 2) Issues over money and publishing rights and 3) No matter how good a song Andy and Stewart write, Sting will probably not want to sing it.

Anyway, I look forward to more Sacred Grove videos, Stewart's next project, Andy's documentary and whatever Sting's doing next.

You must listen again to the last question Stewart was asked : his answer is : When we played in the studio nothing happened . It's hard to hear but I think that's true nevertheless. So perhaps do they have to reinvent new ways of playing together ant not try to duplicate Police sound , because as Stewart said they all evolved musically and individually.So only them have the key to decide wether or not to make new music, not only Sting.I think to be at the top of the charts is not the point ( even if their egos would perhaps be touched) of course new music by The Police would sell , but I think the real point is to find pleasure , ethusiasm to play together again.Again I think the guys have so muchmusical respect for each other so if it must happen it will. Let's trust them. So let's see in the future....
