QUOTE FROM RS:
Last week Trent Reznor told fans to keep an eye on that Nine Inch Nails/Jane’s Addiction tour Website, and now we know why: The NIN/JA2009.com launched today with a free six-song EP in tow. Featuring two songs by each of the artists involved with tour, the Jane’s Addiction tracks are the highlights.
Two songs that appeared on Jane’s Addiction’s 1987 self-titled live album, “Whores” and “Chip Away,” make their studio debuts more than 20 years later, with Reznor himself serving as the tracks’ producer. You can hear Reznor’s flourishes all over the drum-heavy “Chip Away” and on “Whores,” which sounds like it would have been at home on the second side of Ritual de lo Habitual.
“Whores” was on the set list of Jane’s Addiction’s high-octane performance at SXSW last night, where the band played a not-so-secret show stocked with pre-1991 songs in an old supermarket outside Austin, Texas. The EP also features two new tracks by Nine Inch Nails, dubbed “Not So Pretty Now” and “Non-Entity,” plus two tracks by Tom Morello’s new Street Sweeper side project, which will open for the bands on tour. As Reznor has always been a champion of high-quality sound, the EP is being offered in three DRM-free formats: MP3, FLAC and better-than-CD 24/96 WAVE files.
“Just to get some creative juice flowing, we went into the studio for about two weeks,” Perry Farrell told Billboard.com about the tracks. “We had the idea to re-record two tunes, just because they’d never been done officially in the studio. And we had some fun writing some new things. A handful that are close to finished, but not quite done. But there’s no rush to put anything out at this point.”
