How about centralizing live shows

How about centralizing live shows

Postby kinetickid on 10 Mar 2009 02:18

Hey everyone,

I thought of an idea that would be really fun. I was thinking that maybe we should start a file sharing website based on the Police. This would include full concerts audio and video. We could probably make bit torrent version of it. There is alot of good stuff but it seems to be scattered and for the fan that wants to hear the old stuff and the new stuff i find that it would be fun. I know there is dimeadozen and other websites, but this one would be just Police stuff ... Tell me if i am nuts or infringing stuff ;P
And every fan can post and share the Torrent on this site ...

Cheers,

Kinetic Kid :D

We would have to discuss first with others to see who wants to participate in order to launch it. I will start working on it as soon as i have a few contributers.

Would we get sued?

If not, I'd be all for it. Good idea, KK.
On Google - site:stewartcopeland.net "your keyword here" - thanks DM!!

Dietmar ? Giovanni ?

Will we get sued ? I am not really sure, but as long as no one makes money off of it we're ok ... Besides the whole point is too share and not sell the material. If you can get it on Youtube then you are fine in my opinion and this would be stuff that has not been released so it wouldn't go against copyrights.

Did you try LiSting ?
We've been sharing shows on the web before Dime and all other websites like that.
There, you can fin a show, and informations about it : quality, what happened, is it a better show than this other one... things like that.
And that, for Stewart, Andy, Sting, The Police or Fiction Plane.
Would it be worth building a new site, although one already exists ?

LiSting^ is a great resource.

Agroovie1 has also been maintaining extensive lists of the bootlegs available out there, both at TP.com (whose fate is unknown) and at the free Police fansite, policefans.org:

http://policefans.org/forum/

You have to sign up for an account to access the trading post section, but the site is free, and Jeff has done an amazing job of keeping the boots updated and organized. The categories that he has set up:

Police Recordings
Outlandos Era (and before) Shows (1977-1979)
Reggatta Era Shows (1979-1980)
Zenyatta Era Shows (1980-1981)
Ghost Era Shows (1981-1982)
Synchronicity Era (and beyond) Shows (1983-2003)
Reunion Era Shows (2007-2008)
Miscellanea, Interviews, Demos, Unreleased, Etc
Andy Solo and Other Projects
Stewart Solo and Other Projects
Sting Solo and Other Projects
Fan Created Collections

Non-Police Recordings
Elvis Costello
Fiction Plane

Not trying to discourage anyone's project, of course; just sharing a resource.
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

It is true though that there isn't anywhere that Police video is available for direct download in an organized way. That would be cool!

True, but it would also be easier for copyright holders/RIAA/MPAA to raise a stink and shut it down, or even bring charges. Just because a performance is not officially released does not exempt it from copyright law (depending on where you are talking about).

You may have noticed how much stuff is being removed from YouTube, and I don't expect it to get better as time goes on. And that's stuff that isn't (technically) download-able.

I know of other band-centric torrent sites (U2, Pearl Jam, Phish, etc.) that operate with either the band's permission or general approval...and some of those could be brought to task if their music company OR association made an issue about it. As much as I love our boys, I'm not so sure that they would turn a blind eye. And while I certainly would sign up if it was created, it may be easier (and safer) to let the usual sites handle it.

I don't want to be a wet blanket on the idea, just trying to keep the idea realistic. I'd happily contribute if such a site existed (as I have already on some of the other sites).
