Oscars

OK, I KNOW a lot of the floozies are gonna tune in to watch Hugh Jackman.

Is 'Slumdog' gonna win?

Personally, I'll be tweaked if Kate Winslet doesn't get one at last.

Am I the only person in the US who did not like Slumdog Millionaire???
In a purfect Lil'T World:
Milk should win as best movie
Mickey Rourke as best actor (or Sean Penn, but I like comebacks)
RDJ should win best supporting actor (but Kadaver Jolly will get it, besides, comedies and comedic roles rarely win)
Kate Winslet should win for best actress, although not for that movie. Just because it's insulting to nominate Brangelina in the same category as the actors mentioned above.
Hugh Jackman is HAWT, but presenting the Oscars is no mean feat...
Am I the only person who loves to watch the dresses on the red carpet more than the actual awards?

The editor for Roger Ebert's website, Jim Emerson, ABSOLUTELY DETESTS Slumdog Millionaire, as noted in his blog:

http://blogs.suntimes.com/scanners/2009 ... mment.html

Here a taste of the blog entry:

QUOTE

But, wow, I was unprepared for how much I detested "Slumdog Millionaire."

. . .

I have no issues with Boyle's cheery depiction of the resilience of slum children and the sunny side of slum life: it is part of the unchanging popular oriental stereotype of poverty equals slums equals dirty, smiling children. Been there, seen that. [...]

My quibble with Slumdog Millionaire lies elsewhere. [...]

I suspect what Boyle tries to do is a Bollywood film -- the dirt-poor lost brothers, unrequited love -- with dollops of gritty realism. But at the end of it all, it is a pretty callow copy of a genre which only the Indians can make with the élan it deserves. The realism skims the surface, and in spite of some decent performances, style dominates over substance.

END QUOTE

As far as EQ's other Oscar comments, I really don't think Penelope Cruz should win as Best Supporting Actress (even though she probably will) since I don't think that she was even the best supporting actress in that movie (Rebecca Hall was, though some may consider her the lead).

I also hope that Kate wins as well, though mainly so that they give her more air time on the telecast (drool).

I really do think that Heath Ledger deserves Best Supporting Actor, and not just because he's dead. I really really liked The Dark Knight.

The omission of Springsteen invalidates the whole category of Best Song. I am not a fan of The Boss really, but it was clearly the best movie song of the year.

It is hard for me to say that RDJ should win as Best Supporting Actor, though I liked him quite a bit in Tropic Thunder, given that I thought Tom Cruise was better (or at least more memorable) in the same movie.

I usually like Sean Penn (I especially like him in The Falcon and the Snowman), but he just didn't do it for me in Milk. Maybe because I thought his supporting actors were better than him (Josh Brolin and James Franco in particular). Its gotta be Mickey Rourke.

Personally, I thought Benjamin Button was the best movie I've seen this year, but I am a bit biased since I am such a huge Fincher fan.
There is no bigger gong.

Oh yeah, I hope Kate wins for best actress. Mickey Rourke..OMG...he really was amazing in that role. He does need to cut his hair he looks horrible. I saw his interview on Larry King or whatever recently.

Heath Ledger..RIP  ..so tragic, so talented and one hell of a job on Dark Knight. I watched that and got chills.

That's EXACTLY why I don't like it - Bollywood in disguise.

I really don't think Penelope Cruz should win as Best Supporting Actress (even though she probably will).

Well, I think the black actress in "Doubt" should get it, even if she has only 1 scene: it was majestic.

I really do think that Heath Ledger deserves Best Supporting Actor, and not just because he's dead. I really really liked The Dark Knight.

Many people did; still, I think that if he were alive (poor guy, nonetheless), this role would have been totally overlooked.

CONCUR.

It is hard for me to say that RDJ should win as Best Supporting Actor, though I liked him quite a bit in Tropic Thunder, given that I thought Tom Cruise was better (or at least more memorable) in the same movie.

Yes, but the Academy is dead set against Tom. (IMHO he should have won already 2 Oscars for Born on the 4th of July and Magnolia).
I think that both roles were priceless (You Don't Go Full Retard - Memorable!) and that RDJ is like Al Pacino: LOOOONG due for an Oscar, he will eventually get one not for his best role.
I also think that James Brolin could deservedly get it, but for HL, a Golden Globe is more than enough.

I usually like Sean Penn (I especially like him in The Falcon and the Snowman), but he just didn't do it for me in Milk.

He is normally a "HOO-HAH" actor a la Pacino, very intense: I loved his Harvey Milk because he was very subtle and not flamboyant, and I know people who have met all the real characters at the time: they say Sean and James accurately portrayed the two real people.
Having said that, I would be very happy if Mickey Rourke wins. The Wrestler was an excellent movie.

Last but not least - Better Button than Millionaire - but NO Oscars to Brad Pitt, please!!!

Don't get me started on the Oscars, I for one won't be watching.

Just that the way the economy is right now, is really spending all that money patting each other on the back a good use, especially as some of the so called economic stimulus is going to Hollywood. So we all pay for it eventually.

I do like the red carpet stuff, and will checking out the Go Fug Yourself live blog: http://gofugyourself.celebuzz.com/ but two hours of it on the E network is a bit much.

I didn't see most of the movies...every year I put pressure on myself to go, go, go, and then give up. Finally got to seeing The Reader and was glad I did.

I **LOVE** GoFugYourself!!! :'))) Normally the commentators (I watch it on ABC because I cannot stand E!) keep mum on the blunders and only praise the good choices - but it's the blunders we want to see!!

animal, I know what you mean, but, as an adoptive Californian, I must tell you that the Oscars are just a Job Fair for the movie industry, and actually revitalize the market of DVDs, Blu-rays etc.
And the dresses and jewelry you see is on loan for the night, the actresses act as spokespeople for this or that stylist, it's part of the job.

As our Governator stated after the refusal of the stimulus package (or supposed refusal) on behalf of the Southern "red states", "more money for us, then! Yay!"

I'm also sure they will be some political expression during at least one of the speeches...

T, glad to hear you like GFY too. Even when they put Sting on the "celebrity terror watch," but they were right, and they summed up how a lot of us feel about the new look ;)

Animal, you're right, there will be political commentary. I don't mind when it is absolutely tied in to the movie but sometimes it goes on for too long and gets too shrill.

I'll TiVo the thing so I can get through it in 30 minutes, see the clothes (I admit, T, I enjoy seeing them as well), and oogle Mr. Jackman (You KNOW he's gonna sing-- yay! He was so great in Oklahoma!) Since I have seen pretty much 0 of the movies nominated this year (not that I wouldn't like to have seen some of them-- just haven't had the opportunity), I'll tune in for the pretties.

Ha! Ya, confession: I've seen zero of the movies myself. Tried to get into 'Slumdog' but we went the same night a slew of other date-type movies opened, and the line was so long we missed it. Figured we'd just wind up buying it on vid anyway so we didn't go back.

I sorta loved Emerson's rationale for hating it, though. Can't wait to see it so I can judge for myself.

Winslet made a fan of me for life with 'Eternal Sunshine.' Also loved her turn in Ricky Gervais' show 'Extras' (in which she made fun of herself for never winning an Oscar.)

vespa and I almost never go to the movies (I think the last film I saw in an actual movie theater was "The Forbidden Kingdom"...hey, I love Jackie Chan!) so I'm skipping out tonight as I basically have no fucking clue about any of the nominated films/actors...plus I hate awards show bullshit anyway...

...if a film is really decent I'll torrent it or buy it on dvd...
