I suspect what Boyle tries to do is a Bollywood film -- the dirt-poor lost brothers, unrequited love -- with dollops of gritty realism. But at the end of it all, it is a pretty callow copy of a genre which only the Indians can make with the élan it deserves. The realism skims the surface, and in spite of some decent performances, style dominates over substance.

That's EXACTLY why I don't like it - Bollywood in disguise.
I really don't think Penelope Cruz should win as Best Supporting Actress (even though she probably will).
Well, I think the black actress in "Doubt" should get it, even if she has only 1 scene: it was majestic.
I really do think that Heath Ledger deserves Best Supporting Actor, and not just because he's dead. I really really liked The Dark Knight.
Many people did; still, I think that if he were alive (poor guy, nonetheless), this role would have been totally overlooked.
The omission of Springsteen invalidates the whole category of Best Song. I am not a fan of The Boss really, but it was clearly the best movie song of the year.
CONCUR.
It is hard for me to say that RDJ should win as Best Supporting Actor, though I liked him quite a bit in Tropic Thunder, given that I thought Tom Cruise was better (or at least more memorable) in the same movie.
Yes, but the Academy is dead set against Tom. (IMHO he should have won already 2 Oscars for Born on the 4th of July and Magnolia).
I think that both roles were priceless (You Don't Go Full Retard - Memorable!) and that RDJ is like Al Pacino: LOOOONG due for an Oscar, he will eventually get one not for his best role.
I also think that James Brolin could deservedly get it, but for HL, a Golden Globe is more than enough.
I usually like Sean Penn (I especially like him in The Falcon and the Snowman), but he just didn't do it for me in Milk.
He is normally a "HOO-HAH" actor a la Pacino, very intense: I loved his Harvey Milk because he was very subtle and not flamboyant, and I know people who have met all the real characters at the time: they say Sean and James accurately portrayed the two real people.
Having said that, I would be very happy if Mickey Rourke wins. The Wrestler was an excellent movie.
Last but not least - Better Button than Millionaire - but NO Oscars to Brad Pitt, please!!!
