Uncle Miles' New Blog

Uncle Miles' New Blog

Postby Divemistress of the Dark on 21 Feb 2009 20:09

Hey folks, was just going through some stuff and found Uncle Miles' new site, where he's writing some updates about some current events. Unsurprisingly, he has some really interesting comments on developments in the Middle East and elsewhere.

You can register and make comments, but you have to click the "login" button on the bottom of the page, not right where the blog posts are.

It's hard to keep up with Miles, seems like he has a new URL every couple of months, but for now here's the new one:

Thanks Jean and interesting what he posted into his biography section:

September 1999 saw the re-entry into the market of Sting with his new album, Brand New Day. This album and the world tour (October 1999 thru April 2001) had Miles and the company heavily involved in all aspects of Sting. The album sold 8 million copies worldwide. The tour grossed 70 million. Unwittingly Miles virtually revolutionized the use of corporate advertising by a unique deal with Jaguar to promote the Desert Rose single. Upon first viewing the video for Desert Rose, Miles noticed that the Jaguar car inadvertently used came off as good as the song did. He immediately tracked down the advertising account executive for Jaguar and offered the video in return for a major TV campaign that advertised Stings song and album. The result was a fourfold sales jump for Sting AND Jaguar. This synergistic marriage of art and commerce has become the ultimate model that everyone has been trying to emulate ever since. A full chapter is devoted to it in “Madison & Vine” by Scott Donaton (McGraw-Hill).

Many corporations had bad experiences working with music personalities and their entourages. Musicians by nature are suspicious and anti-establishment. Most would not believe there was actually promotion or image enhancing-potential to be had; only money. The Sting Jaguar commercial changed this forever. Miles’ knack of marrying art and commerce to mutual advantage led to a number of lucrative speaking engagements, something Miles likes to do and seems to be good at. As a manager, publisher, record exec and agent for other acts, he found it a refreshing challenge to be an “act” himself.

Not surprisingly, I am having a HELLUVA time trying to register. It said I was, I had successfully changed my password, etc. - but I couldn't login, and it looks as if that is not an uncommon problem. But when I went to troubleshooting - well, I might as well have been reading Arabic for all I understood. Honestly, I am so in awe of all you nutters who I KNOW are not that much younger than I am, but have mastered the Internet. It's not for lack of trying, and I'm not stupid - but I guess stupid and ignorant are close cousins, lol.

Yr. welcome.

For what it's worth, I was able to register and post a comment, but I just went back there to get more info for you folks - and the comment wasn't showing up.

Too bad. Miles is a really interesting correspondent. Here's hoping he gets this fixed. Maybe I'll run by his Tribe page and report the glitch.

Great discover

Postby giovanni on 22 Feb 2009 12:32

Great discover, thanks!
I'm definitely into "what's happening in the world these decades", and Miles point of view is absolutely interesting.

I'm now reading a book about the economic emperor's of China and India, and their relation with the rest of the world. Amazing reading, I do discover new things every day.
The book is entitled 'The Empire on Cindia'.

When i read Miles's blog, I get bummed that Ian isn't around to comment about the stuff going on in the world, especially with the popularity of podcasting these days. I bet Miles, Ian and Stewart together could have put together a great podcast show on their opinions about current events.

Thanks, Gio - I'm always looking for good book recommends; that's pretty much the only way I read - hate wasting my time trying to find a good book following the bestsellers or trolling the book stores.
