File this one under "awesome idea combined with a great cause." The War Child International charity, which provides aid to children in war-torn countries like Iraq and Afghanistan, recently asked 16 legendary musicians, to choose a song from their catalogue and a contemporary artist to reinterpret the tune. The result: Heroes, a new compilation out February 24 via Astralwerks.

AUUUUUUGHHHH! Like "Imagine" can only be sung by Lennon, Heroes can only be sung by Bo.

Wow. I am even more out of it than I thought. I was clueless on all but 4 of the new artists. My last child is graduating from high school this year - what if he moves out right away?! I don't want to be one of those oldies that don't know nuffin' but oldies! I'm already stuck in the '80's (and quite like it actually), but have learned to appreciate hip hop and reggae via my offspring (and, incidentally, I QUITE like Offspring). I'm done for.

Love your honesty. I have to be up to date for my job...

I'd say they are more post-grunge simil-punk than reggae...(unfortunately, the definitions, which I hate, are part of my job...)

Love the song, have never seen the video - being very partial to radiological scans of any kind, I must say the opening is KILLER.

I am partial to Come Out and Play and the song about (don't remember the name) what happened to all their peers in the neighborhood. I know I am biased because they sing about dynamics of which I am very aware (ladies and gentlemen, this is the REAL Orange County), but I also think it's quite cool that, while Dexter never did finish it, he was working on his Ph.D is molecular biology at UCLA when the band hit.

I like Offspring, too...one of my favoritist mix-disc 'guilty pleasures' is the song 'Get a Job' off Americana. HA! Think I'll go listen to it now.

This looks FABULOUS, T!!!! Man!!! Some of it is really inspired. I can't wait to hear the TVotR track and actually I think that Scissor Sisters cover might be interesting. You got a link to preorder?

Oh, btw - the Kooks are a band that's been recording at Konk Studios w/Ray Davies. I just bought an album of theirs but haven't listened to it yet.

Flipping heck. That's - erm - fucking brilliant.

I'm rather enjoying the fact that I have very little idea what any of those covers will sound like. Plus it is warchild, so if they had an entire album of Tony Blair doing Led Zep covers with a pair of spoons, with video extras of him grooving out dressed only in his underpants, I'd probably track it down and buy it anyway.

When I was still in the Old world, early 90s, there were two Band Wars:
Oasis/Blur
Green Day/Offspring.

I am partial to the first two, but I never disliked the others. Turns out my favorites were the ones that went the distance, though.
