All-Stewart version of 'Everyone Stares'?

All-Stewart version of 'Everyone Stares'?

Postby Divemistress of the Dark on 12 Oct 2006 00:34

OK, so tonight I was listening to the IPod whilst doing some data entry for a local political campaign (TN is rumored to be the pivotal race for control of the U.S. Senate and everyone's going bananas out here), and noticed the tape quality for Stewart's intro to 'Everyone Stares' was obviously recorded separately from Sting's vocals for the track.

Anyone got a copy of Stewart singing the entire song? I'd like to hear it.

(Some other stuff...how on earth did Stewart get those otherworldly effects out of his kit on 'Other Way of Stopping?' I really like the stereo effects on that track, too...

I had not noticed it's him doing the 1,2,3,4 on the 'Regatta' title track until tonight...how many times have I heard that song...? ;))
On Google - site:stewartcopeland.net "your keyword here" - thanks DM!!

I've never heard of a Stewart-only version of this track, but I'd be EXTREMELY KEEN on getting it!

Heh heh... I grew up listening to this album on headphones, first on some decent big Radio Shack ones, and then on portable ones once they came out (and dropped in price) in 1982 or so. Great for hearing that kind of stuff!

He loves the delay.

They really use it on Other Way of Stopping...the drums have a slapback....kinda like a repeat of one....echo.

It's so cool the "doom dugga dugga doom, doom dugga dugga..."

Delay Rules.

That "all Stewart version" would be his demo, which is what the song starts with. Legend has it that the opera voice at the end was an amazing coincidence in which Stewart had wires and cables all around the room and something happened to pick up a radio signal.

But, the demo explains why the tape quality changes--cassette (or reel to reel) into multi-track tape.

The delay he talks about in the Montserrat video is definitely what he used on "Regatta de Blanc" and that setup is what he used live. Probably the same (or similar) effects used on "The Other Way of Stopping"--but more slap delay than repeat echo.

One of my favorite effects is what he did on "Darkness." His kit is in one channel, then the repeat echo comes half a beat later on the other channel. Great stuff.

You should get the Police Every Breath You Take DVD. You get that segment and more in the Jools Holland Montserrat video.

It's on the Christmas list, along with Everyone Stares ... I am trying very hard to limit my distractions right now, although between SC.net and YouTube I am failing miserably  .

When you get those, you will:
1 - see them at least 99 times in one month
2- be forever be quoting from the vids on this forum
3 - disappear from the forum entirely to re-watch the second you think you missed....
4: melt in front of a freeze frame of Stew dancing with the people in Montserrat.
