New-user trolls...?

Hey guys, I'm noticing some, er, unorthodox names listed at the bottom of the forum as 'new users.' Wonder if there's any way you could set the software so Gio or Eugenio would have to approve any new users.

Just worried we're going to lose a bunch of posts again, is all....

I use the same message board software (phpBB) on my websites, and unfortunately, there's no easy tool for weeding out spam accounts (unless they've upgraded the software since I last installed it). So I end up every week having to go through and cull all the obvious spam accounts from my membership lists, which is no fun task.

PITA, but usually these spammers just want to have a link to their website listed in the memberlist...hackers who have taken down phpBB a few times, I think go after the source code itself.

an almost related topic, specifically for you sockii, since i know virtually nothing about code or web development. is it true that really lengthy threads can cause a board to crash? i've heard this in the past, and was just wondering. some of the threads here never really go away. which is actually great... i would much prefer if we could just continue on having an endless conversation about various topics, but it's just a concern that came to mind...

I've never seen that problem with phpBB, but I know it can (and has) happened on AUI's message board.

There is a tool though, in phpBB, for backing up message archives. So even if there is a crash or a hack you can restore "lost" posts.

Oh I hope there is not another Turkish hacker attack. That felt like real war
