ETA: Nevermind - Anniversary that wasn't

Postby Divemistress of the Dark on 20 Dec 2008 22:24

I had occasion to be digging into some old factoids recently, and it's coming up soon: January 3, 1979: First USA Police gig, Whisky a Go-go, Los Angeles.

Maybe we should do something special. Like buying hearing aids from blowing out our hearing due to all the excellent rock' n roll we Stateside fans have taken in lo these 30 years...

ETA: Edited thread title but not content of posts...d'oh!

I don't want to spoil your party, but the first USA gig of The Police was on Oct. 20, 1978 (at CBGB's in New York City).

So we can celebrate the anniversary of The Police's first gig at the Whisky A Go-Go, then. That works too! :D

We never need much reason to celebrate, do we?

Sorry, folks. Husband did Googling on a project I was working on and now can't remember where he found the bad information. I should add he did said Googling around 3 in the morning and was on something of a deadline, so I can't quite get on his case about it.

Although, now that you mention it, the 1978 date sounds familiar, but as I personally was in third grade at the time, think I can be excused for not having much memory of the blessed event.

(Not to be a bitch about it, but there are only anniversary dates from the months of September through December on the Wiki - using the 'this day in Police history' links, and the 'what links here' link on the main page, anyway. Don't think I didn't go there first to find the info I was looking for ;)

However, since I didn't know the date I was looking for was in October, I didn't think to dig in the Sept - December pages. Also, FYI - the October page lists the CB's gig in 1978, but it doesn't say anything about it being the first USA gig. Although it links to the 10-21-78 page Sockii links in her post, that one doesn't mention it was the first Police show in the U.S. either.

When I get some time I'll try to help add and clean up, as I know the thing is a labor of love and nobody's getting paid or anything to work on it.)

If I had the spare cash Dietmar would totally be on the payroll at this point, given the amazing amount of work he's put into the wiki so far. (Joozt too, one of our amazing lurkers who has devoted tremendous energy to the project).

(Me I mostly deal with the back end of things at the moment. Trust me there's plenty that gets debated and argued that never sees the public light o'day...)

And please allow me to add more props and thanks to JooZt.

Amen. And since some of you kids got to attend the Police 2.0 performance at the Whisky, I say we've got more than enough reason to toast.
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

and if you want to celebrate the 1st Whisky performance then make sure you get THAT date right - not January 3, but March 1 (mix up of the American / European way of writing a date)

;) Let me just say this - some of you may be getting something in the mail shortly that will make this more clear. I'm getting ready to order a second round and/or find a way to make it more widely available and folks may want to help with it - NOT that I'm trying to volunteer DM, Sockii and Dietmar for even more work. The Wiki is an enormous undertaking and I'd say it looks in fine shape, when you consider how much has to go into it.

Seriously, I'll help update Wiki anniversaries when Christmas is finally - finally! - over. At least I blocked that damn scarf today. One huge project down, one to go...
