MSG 7th August - I'll never forget

Postby stevel on 17 Dec 2008 20:11

You know it’s over 4 months since MSG and the great thing about Christmas is calling, meeting and writing to friends and family I’ve not spoken to ...........and guess what? It allows me to recall in detail my fantastic memories of August 7th.
The total joy – tumultuous joy.
Like my taxi ride to MSG to pick up my snake pit ticket (!) after arriving in the Big Apple from the UK. My taxi driver had never heard of MSG! I swear it’s true. Unbelievable.
Like being first in line with Dietmar,Analia and Tommie.
Like meeting some truly great great people who know ....who know just how I feel. This is IT.
The total joy – tumultuous joy.
It’s special.
Like the mad panic run into the ‘Gardens’.
Meeting the beautiful Arpeggios and wonderful Pecos front row.
The opening bars to Get up, Stand up – OMG- the damn thing in my eye must be some dirt or something...
The total joy – tumultuous joy.

Or the landing of the jet plane in the Gardens when the band appears ...I swear I’ve never heard such a noise in my life. In Miles words ‘the place goes ‘absolutely nuts’.
The thrill of hearing ‘Message in a bottle’ for the last time (?).
The dizzy heights of ‘Can’t stand loosing you’ into ‘Regatta’.
The total joy – tumultuous joy.

The magician that’s Stewart in ‘Wrapped around your Finger’.
And then Pecos kindly offers me THE FLAG ‘Steve would you like to hold the flag?’ (for ‘Every Little Thing..’ ) I mean ... well ... words just can’t explain...
The total joy – tumultuous joy.

And the PANIC as ‘Next to you’ starts up .... this is the last time you’ll ever see The Police.
Stewart’s point to us ‘Nutters’ – he got me
– right through the HEART.
The t-shirt aim to Dietmar.Perfect.
The total joy – tumultuous joy.
I’ll never forget it.Ever.

Thank you Stewart, Giovanni and Eugennio you'll never know.....

A bunch of us all over the world huddled on our computers, watching the LN/BB commercial for the umpteenth time and groaning together.

Thanks for your great post, Steve. I love reliving that evening thanks to all the brilliant recaps that we got from people like you. I can't believe how much time has already passed since MSG. Hope we can all meet together again somewhere down the road. There are too many awesome people on here that I wished lived a closer to each other. I'm fortunate to live near so many of the fabulous East Coast nutters.

Oh man. Thanks stevel. I keep remembering what you said, not long after it had dawned on me that a bunch of us were really there. It was along the lines of, 'Somebody pinch me. I don't believe it. I'm dreaming. The alarm clock is going to go off and I'll wake up with the kids leaping on the bed and it will be a Monday morning.'

That was so perfect, and reminded me in the nick of time of dafttart's advice to try and take a mental snapshot (bloody good advice as it happens - the mental images/recordings are much better composed and more in focus than the camera ones)

I'll never forget it as well. I cancelled great seats with D-A-O for an outdoor gig that I was gonna be in. I told the director that I'd kill him if it rained that night. Guess what? On the plus side, I spent the night with TOWOS here on this forum. The director is still alive, by the grace of god, hahah.

Policerule hears what I posted ..well a small part of my experience with my taxi driver...lol its ALL true.

So my plan is to go from Newark staright to the MSG.Except wait for it and I swear to God this is true, my taxi driver has never heard of Madison Square Gardens and he even stops twice to ask other taxi drivers.
At one point he turns to me with his white gleaming teeth and points to a sign that says MSG right (just after the tunnel) so why ‘dum head’ are we in the left hand lane heading left......duhh.
I’ve convinced myself its a scam to get more $ but to be fair am charged $65 as he said at the outset- only the journey seems to have taken almost as long as the 8 hour flight.

Well, at least there was proof that he wasn't the ONLY taxi driver in Newark that hadn't heard of MSG.

Every cab driver has to have a first night on the job at least once. =o)

I too had the "pinch me" moment, but there I was, this average bloke from Tas-fucking-mania, at the arse end of Australia, standing in the bloody VIP pit, watching the greatest band ever play their coveted last show of a tour nobody thought was going to happen, within arms reach of Stings wife and kids and Entertainment Weekly only knows who else of fame or fortune. ME! Holy shit.

I'm still hoping to get my hands on footage that proves it wasn't just an extremely nice yet elaborate dream.

Know that feeling, but you and Lyn were definitely there. Or we were all suffering from a cross-cultural, multinational, multi-lingual group hallucination. Now you mention it, the latter does sound more plausible than the alternative, but for the fact that a bunch of us had dinner together the following night.....

Quite a year, huh? :-)
