OT the Cars

Just reminded of how completely unbelievable the Cars's debut album is listening to it earlier tonight...

In doing so, I also think I have found the perfect crash sound--whatever 16' or so (sounds like a 16 & an 18) David Robinson was playing on this album, that's it, that's the one I want...if anyone knows offhand, lemme know else I gonna have to wait to dig it up!

HA!

Mr. D's a huge fan, so we listen to a lot of that album around here. Think I told you about going to see the new lineup with Todd Lundgren last year.

I'll bug him for drum info.

Fantastic debut album followed by a meh remainder of a career. Too bad.

I always liked that album but never closely listened to the drums on that until the whole album was released on Rock Band. Very underrated drum album in my opinion. The only track I don't like is "I'm in Touch with Your World" or what ever that's called.

Can anyone in my generation hear Moving in Stereo and NOT think of Fast Times at Ridgemont High? Classic. My personal favorite regarding the drums on that album - You're All I Got Tonight.

Yeah, that song was Ric's dig at his Catholic upbringing.

Love The Cars.

Also loved this scene from Alias which played homage to the Phoebe Cates scene:

One of my first favorite bands of all time.
The debut album had a great cover too.

I think the debut and Candy-O were on Billboards Top 20 or so at the same time if I recall correctly.

Definitely went south after that. High anticipation for Panorama....but ended up pretty disappointed...tried REAL hard to like that one.

Cars are great to play drums to. Especially for beginners. Basic, easy beats and fills. Classic.

Cars was one of the first bands I put headphones on and played drums to. Then CCR, then the Doors, Beatles. Then up to Zeppelin, Hendrix, Deep Purple, Sabbath, James Brown, Bob Marley, English Beat, Talking Heads, ZZTop............. :)

David Robinson is definitely one of the unsung talents in rock. Solid, spacious, tasteful, and groovin'. Candy-O was my first Cars LP. Got the first one at a garage sale a few years back. I'm sorta' immune to that one - gets played to death on radio.

I've never been able to figure out those cymbals. They sound like some wierd Zildjian/Paiste hybrid.

P.S. Did he ever use his ride? :?:

P.P.S They could bring back Ric but would never be the same without Ben Orr.

There's a bonus interview with the band that came out with the 'Cars Unlocked' DVD back in '06. It's the last one with Orr before his death.

And it's SO sad, seeing the state he was in after just being so cool in the actual concert footage.

I'm not terrifically nuts about Ocasek's output in general - it's solid, but it doesn't send me over the moon - I gotta say, though, he's produced some really terrific albums. Guided by Voices, Bad Brains...

Mr. Dive indeed is a big Cars fan, and is a super-sleuth when it comes to tracking anything music-wise things down--it didn't take him long to unearth the following for those of us interested in Robinson's cymbal sound...It is by far the best lead I've seen on the topic but I still can't quite figure why they sound so unique-- perhaps mixing, perhaps technique...

http://dailyeventsbookpagethree.blogspo ... -1982.html

"As for David Robinson, he has two matching Slingerland sets, "one's chrome and one's red." He also uses timbales, a Ludwig snare drum, Sonor foot pedals, Ludwig cymbal stands, Zildjian cymbals -14" high hats, 14" thin crash, 16" medium crash, 18" medium crash, 22" ride and one which varies from year to year, though it's generally a 16" swish. His drum heads are all Remo Ambassador all-white rough coats, except for the timbales, which take Remo Diplomats. Robinson also uses two drum machines, the Roland TR-808 and "one which is the cheapest you can buy." He also has two Syndrum boards. "One is the newest model, and the other is one of the first ones, which has been modified to do different things," Robinson also has a switching system set-up in his drum kit that activates the syndrums without his having to turn around. It was designed by Robinson, his drum roadie Hegg, and other members of the Cars crew,

If all that equipment isn't enough for you, there's the new studio. "It was another studio before this," Ocasek explained, "but it was only the one room upstairs. We ripped all the walls out, rewired it, built a room on the back and did all this down here." The studio now boasts a control room, main studio, drum room, guitar/reverb room (dubbed the "loud" room because, as Robinson put it, "it sounds like a little gymnasium") and a lounge. All are wired so you can plug directly into the board, and there's even a set-up for closed-circuit TV, so those in the downstairs rooms can see those upstairs, and vice versa."

It's funny to find this on top of the threads. I just got a collection of Cars CD's just so I can drum along with them. I've got some cassettes from eons ago. They were one of the highlights of the 80's IMO.

Love their music, but I have to say (fans, close your ears) one of the most boring concerts I've ever attended. They created absolutely zero connection with their audience throughout the entire gig. It was 1983-84 timeframe, so whatever tour that was. But they came out, played, and left without so much as a word to the audience. SNORE.

I remember thinking, right after the show, "I should have just stayed home and listened to the record."
